can you use the cast manifolds or do you want hi po ones?

Hey Greg, don't plan on using the cast manifold, just had them handy and thought I would cut them up to get an idea of what I'm up for when I make my own manifold.
Was so surprised when the passenger side bolted in with no problem uncut.
Next week I hope to make a start on the fab work.

Ordered and received the first bits to make the headers. Now comes the head scratching, LOL.
Went for 2" off the manifold, 2.5" after 1st "Y" and 3" to muffler.

Hey Kev, not sure if it's ok to do that rule wise?? Wouldn't think so but I do agree with you, extra room would be handy.

And you need to get 4 pipes through that^^^ gap. Correct?

Not sure that will happen, 4 pipes may be asking a little to much. Might have to get the first "Y" up above the steering column.

I'll be watching how you get on with the headers as I'll be doing that at some point. Could you trim the end of the steering column back closer to the bulkhead?

I've buit a few sets of 4 into 1's for LS1's into Toranas, best for two pipes to go in front of starter and then under, and two down the side as you have started. And it helps heaps if you take the outer cover off the column up to the fire wall, gives you more wiggle room.

Used the idea of cutting back the steering column outer. Was careful to cut it straight so the bush and bearing went back in cleanly. 72a0cd88a4b9af8bd83f24a01223dbdc.jpg

Went back in easily enough. Hooked up the steering again.

This gave me a heap more room. Got a path for 2 pipes to go now. 56d9958fb0621564a7edb5f4ddb9c67a.jpg

Thought it would be best if I put in the spark plug leads as well, don't need a problem with them fouling with the pipes.

a7aed234f47906b22adec8d8a7256a0d.jpg

It did change the angle which I had the pipes in at last night.

So gave put in a small offset in the pipe closest to the firewall to get the angle back, and run the next one around the steering column,

5a0223ead5f0208a06d3d9ee2a843296.jpg

Next was to change direction of that pipe to get along the same line as the first pipe.

Got this tacked up. Pretty happy for a first attempt at exhaust headers.

Front 2 pipes I hope to head around and past the top arms.
I have room only just for 2 of the 2 1/2" pipes down past the starter motor and sub frame.

The reason I don't get onto my car is work gets in the way.
Bought a second hand collar maker, pulled it apart and gave it a good clean and splash of paint and reassemble.

That machine makes the metal collar that you see on the sides of sheetmetal airconditioning duct, the collar is used to duct tape flexible duct to, which goes out to the diffuser.

Hey Craig, you might want to replace the cotter pin nylock nuts with two nuts locked together. The heat may affect the locking action.

Do you think a crush nut would be ok Darky? Your right though, nylocs would turn to jelly being that close to the header pipes.

Yes if the cotter pin thread is hardened properly, otherwise the thread may gal up. Two nuts are always better than one. :)

That is if you have the room!

Craig,

just keep in mind the engine torque on the gaps. pretty sure it's drivers side first then back off passenger side.- 6 pack

thats some tally ho paper clearance. the exzorst is tricky with thoes clearance.

whilst it's not the same my car carby ( battery tray) and exhaust ( top control arm) were rubbing in de acceleration. three cents.

big effort on this car man.
