Boss allowed. Quick release allowed.

Mounting point remains the same.

Can space the wheel to lower it.

My mount is part of the safety cage.......is that ok??? It has been lowered slightly but not with spacers, but with the attachment welded to the safety cage.
Is that all ok??
These are sort of questions I had to decide on before cutting anything out.
I thought long and hard on how I was going to keep the dash original, build the safety cage and fit the steering. All of which is covered by rules.
It took a bit of conviction to do the first cut, I can tell you that much.

Was the part of the cage that you have the steering mounted to approved by the CAMS inspector?

Yep part of it. I also wanted the design checked, mounts to the floor, front bars into engine bay (that was a new rule allowing bars outside the passenger compartment), that I can remember.

Might be a point of contention.

Everything I can find relates to the steering column and mounting needing to be unmodified.

But given that the section of dash needed to be removed for the approved cage may provide an opening.

And would think that if the position is within the scope of the positioning allowable with original it may go through.

That could be a problem point with a scrutineer.

Spot on Rob, safety cage was the opening. The safety cage and its construction override all other rules, as its a safety issue.
I have got it all documented in photos with measurements. It still took a fair bit of courage to back myself and take to the dash with the grinder.

Appreciate the interest Rob, it's good to talk about these things. Rule interpretation can be difficult on your own.
It's good to talk it out before doing anything.
I have also had my mate who is building the Monaro to talk to about this stuff which has been great for balanced views.

No worries.

Im an electrician.

We have a rule book.

Learned years ago that there can be more than one interpretation to a rule.

Provided you could back it up in context with the situation you could get it past all but the most anal inspector.

I have to work at last count under the auspices of 32 different AS/NZ standards depending on what I am doing.

There are a lot of areas open to interpretation in those rules.

As you arent racing for sheep stations Im guessing the rules are there to allow freedom to an extent.

Its more about the racing than the rules. To an extent anyway.

Hopefully the attached will work. It always says to big.
This is factory spec option for ST10 blister. Very intrusive but it was a GM option none the less. This is GM Spec to the mm. How they were.

If you are worried go down thus road of a blister.

I've been chatting to the main Legit officer for IPRA on a couple of items of late. The things you hear are there or there abouts. As long as you have documents/ spec to say this is how it was done as an option then its all good.

Same with the hole in the bonnet. Freakng unreal on what they would go down the road to say it doesn't belong to the car. The argument is it never was done in factory keeps come back however if you have the spec sheet on dimensions and keep it with log book for the "clever" scrutineers you will always win.

You've recreated the wheel a bit with your car so it will be a journey but I don't believe you are to far off the mark.

If attachment wont work I should be home to try on the computer rater than phone.

The only problem that I could foresee is because you cut the brace running across the tunnel, you could probably use 3 x cable ties and it would be stronger than the Torana sheetmetal, however they may look down the nose at you for that. Only thing to do really is to get another appointment with a scrutineers, or run with it until you get pulled up for it.

WOW Dave, that is really similar to my tunnel just a bit shorter. Thank you a lot for letting me see that.
I take it that the pictures are from a race car? What class is it for? I take you race IP if you've been talking to EO's.
The picture I put on the IP forum certainly caused a bit of debate. Some think it's ok but more thought it not.

I could have built the car with a more simple plan but I just wanted parts that will be bullet proof.
Recreating the wheel certainly wasn't the intent, LOL, but I suppose it can happen.

Your car is as close to recreation as far as I can see mate. Work of art.

I will be racing when the old girl is done as the family has been for nearly 60yrs.

I haven't done much since my project begun nearly 4urs ago... Many tears but I couldn't have asked RH to do a better job.

My car is very traditional. An older brother to yours so to speak. A teaser photo attached but much further along now:Attached File  V__AA4A(1).jpg   96.89K   5 downloads

Whoops, 4yrs. Miss type.

Cheers.

It took over 4 cars to build this one. The original LX race car then 2x LX, 1x UC plus other cars bought & sold to gather better panels. Veeeeery hard to get perfect parts but should be done in a mth or so.

Yeah the contact with EO is important. Even in regards to my fuel tank. Being a traditional drop tank there were few issues however a simple Q&A cleared it up.

I nearly went all out and ordered a bladdered DropTank but he quoted simply if the races dont go over 30min no foam or bladder required. Then he pointed out that ipra doesn't have meetings with over 12 lap races (from memory).

The above is example of if I spat it and went off and redid without speaking to the EO I would have spent so much extra time & money on something I really didnt interpreted properly.

Either way you have to choose your battles. If you never mention or cant see the steering column then it wouldn't matter. If incorrect & to hard to hide then that's the proble.

I look forward to seeing this weapon of your on the track.

Hey eyepeeler I would like to think your car would comply with the rules as they are .Unless they have changed a lot since I ran in the class back when it was called road reg /club cars ( I  used to own the car Paul Rule now owns ) as I had to do similar mods to fit a muncie  box in the car back then and was never a problem.Hope it all works out for you.

Hi Chris, thanks for the support on that issue. Paul's YouTube videos are great to watch, gotta love a good hatchback at full noise on the track.
The issue has now come down to drivers side of the tunnel. I hope all goes well, will be taking it a bit further this week.

From what you have quoted from the rules and what your saying you have done, think you will be fine craig.
As you know it's a mine field trying to decipher the code of cams, I have emailed them before about things with no help back, just a quote of the rules, until someone actually protests and it goes to cams they are all fence sitters.
Me personally I think you have a case to be legal.
This sort of discrepancy has just occurred regarding a targa car and it has taken months to resolve. The stupid part is there was no "performance" gain to be made, in that case or yours.
Your mods are not going to turn your car from a 10th place car to 1st.

We are having issue with the ute, is not legal under IP coz of the volume of the cabin other than that it meets all technical regs, go figure.
I'd love to actually find a cabin volume for a ve commodore ute coz I think there wouldn't be much difference to a some of the small hatchbacks that are currently racing

Cheers Daz, I think your on the money. I have had a few PM's from the IP forum saying just what you said. Most of the negatives were on the discussion. It's not quite black and white. But have to agree, what I have done wont suddenly take the car up a notch to compete with the best at national level. Shit I cant even make it Barbagallo yet!!

Moving along from the drama of rules and eligibility, I need to get the steering rack and uni joints to clear the engine mount.
Time for butchery!!!
