If you have a look back in the build, I was going to run with a fabricated oil tank for the dry sump up front of the car.

I have to run a 3 litre breather for that tank, which made me think about the practicality of having the tank up front. I decided to make another tank that I will put in the boot.

I decided to make the tank out of alloy and TIG weld it. I have welded everything else before, except for TIG welding alloy. This is my first go at it.

The Baffles I hand made are not to any design, just what I thought would work.

The tank on the right is the main oil tank, the 3 weld on fitting are 2@ -12 for the flow and return and a -6 for the breather.

The ank in the middle is the diff breather tank.

The tank on the left is the breather tank for the main oil tank.

I am yet to get the weld in fittings for the top of each tank.

The wiring loom for the car is all made. It was a mega mess to start with and took over a day to tidy up.

Wiring job done. That was a mammoth effort to sort that out.

Really happy with the look of it inside the car.

Now to get the car on the hoist and get the engine bay done.

The 3 tanks got mounted into the boot of the car. Not a lot of room left in there either.

I have to do the 4 steam port at the top of the block back to the radiator now, as well as tidy up the wiring in the engine bay.

Thanks Grant, the photos of the body work don't show how it really looks. All of the effort has gone into working on making it tough and reliable, not makng it look pretty.
Header pipe wrap took about 8 hours for both. I used way more than I thought I would.

Appreciate it Daz. I was considering a join in the hose to mount the steam pipes, but there is a -6 socket in the radiator I can use.
As the fittings which mount to the block are -3, I have got -3 to -4 inline flare expanders to run all 4 outlets into. -6 line into the radiator.

Cheers Gene, I can't wait to just get the engine started, let alone hit a track. LOL.

Good stuff, I like the round dry sump tank design better! As you have moved the tank in the boot, the hose run is now much longer, if it was me, I would consider -16 on the suction side to give you more volume to the pump - also make sure the hose is suitable for use under suction - some of the cheaper stuff has been known to collapse..

Cheers Sam, will definitely keep an eye on the supply side of it. Might look at -16 in any case. The hose I have used is Earls Proflex. It's pretty good hose.
How's your car going? would be keen to hear.

Top work as always.

Clean tidy wiring and hose work always makes me smile. Such a small thing can make such a massive difference in overall presentation.

How's the weight distribution left to right?

Curious a to whether mounting the oil tank on the passengers side would help offset the driver in the front right at all? (Compared to where it is now) or if it's not enough weight to worry.

What do you think the whole thing will tip the scales at?

No worries, good to hear you are using Earls - You will be able to use your Motec dash to log your oil pressure anyway I guess so if there are any issues you will pick it up when you start testing the car. I totally respect you building your own tank, just make sure you get the angle of the inlets/outlets right so it swirls properly, I assume you have already had a look at a Peterson tank or similar for design ideas? Even if it doesn't work right you can buy nice ex NASCAR ones of eBay for pretty cheap anyway.

Yeah mines going well, I'll update my thread shortly rather than hijack yours!

As said, the line work and wiring look great !

I am another person who looks to details like that too. :D

(On the steam pipe topic... I ran mine into the water pump housing, keeps the lines compact and no issues for me with how it works.)

Oh, and just out of curiosity, did you ever consider some hardlines for the oil or flex all the way made more sense ?

The motec is really cool for logging and monitoring, you can program alarms for what ever pressure and what ever point you would like.
We have a different warning for oil pressure at idle and when been reved.
Love there stuff, the good part about it, is you dont need to look at the dash when racing coz with programming, you will only look at it if there IS something wrong.

For anyone else contemplating such an immense project in the wiring and hose department. consider going to an electrical wholesaler and getting a roll of double sided velcro tape.

When re arranging things it save the use of a lot of cable ties, putting them on then cutting them off all the time.

Finish off with cable ties by all means.

Then do yourself a favour when cutting the tails off the cable ties.

Use a Stanley knife and cut them flush.

Saves getting opened up by sharp ends in mysterious places.

Funny you mention tank design and getting the inlet and outlet in the right spot. My mate has a Peterson tank and I did have a look at it. In the end I just barrelled into it and made it the best way I could. Your right though, if it doesn't work I grab a 2nd hand EBay NASCAR tank.

Hey Jeff, I did look at hard lines for about 10 seconds or so. That job would have been much harder to do on my own. Running the Earls ProFlex hose is easy.
Running steam pipes now in -4 and -6.

A few days late with that tip Rob, LOL. Great idea though, save a lot wasted and cut cable ties to clean up.
I haven't cut or scratched my hands yet on the cut tie ends,

Now that the wiring os all but done, it was time to power it up. Not the engine but the electrical system.

I know, I know, I cant wait for the engine start up either!!!

Flicked the switch and the Motec and on it came.

The Motec bloke went at it and started setting up the functions.

This screen is just a demo screen.

We have set up the following so far on the Keypad:

  • Fuel pumps 1 & 2
  • Ignition
  • Start
  • Warm Up, Practice & Race Screens and the sub screen within that
  • Thermo Fan
  • Indicators
  • Headlights
  • Fuel Re-set
  • Master Re-set
  • Windscreen wipers

Fuel pressure sensor, Brake sensor front & rear, Lambda L & R, Throttle position, Crank Angle, Water Temp, Oil Temp, have all been checked. Probably forgotten something as well, LOL.

Headlights on was exciting, don't they look tough from the front with the lights on.

Motec have the option to have an image come up when the system is turned on,

This looks very cool.
