Thought i should put up some pictures of my LX rebuild.
I have spent long enough looking at some of the others here and like many have really enjoyed the pictures and gained
heaps of info and great tips from them, Hopefully others can do the same from these.
Not much to look at at present as it is at the un-interesting end. The beginning.

It took me this long to get round to putting some up. hopefully i can update it along the way.

The old Girl in the garage. it has been a nervous pull down so close to the LJ.

Out with the old. (I thought this was the bees knees in 1987). My 202 with a 350 holley.

The New bussiness end. Engine came up real nice just as i wanted. No bling.

Some rust that i never even knew existed. Has anyone ever not had rust here??

Rebuilt Salisbury 10 bolt.

Stopped at a Gundagai truck stop on my way to Melbourne. Total trip took me 10 hours. Toyota pulled it well.

Nice, reminds me of my first torrie. One Persian Sand is brown (Mk I), and the other is metallic-bronze (Mk II).

Not from the age of digital cameras.

I actually only have these 2 after all these years. 1 came from my parents the other is the only i can find in all my photos.
A girlfriend I had has all my photos from about 18 through to about my early twenties.
Has a lot of the car in it's prime. Looked really good.

My brother has a few of it in camden in the late 80's i saw in his albums.

1985(i was 15 at the time) It was my first car. I spent all week end painting the lettering on the tires to make it look cool.
Posted Image

This one is from about 1996. The car had really seen better days before then. It had 10 long years of me flogging it as a young bloke.
I had hit a kangaroo in it. (replaced the front clip and flares and never did a good job) they fitted better originally.

I don't really know.
I do know that MK II has a metalic flake look. Well mine did when it was new.
Unless it was just some left over in the painters gun.

once it fades it just looks a bit sad.

But when it is new it is a schmick colour.

I have seen only a few with the black outs and they look very good.

Looks like a good project.

Rust behind the bonnet hinges is fairly common.

Very nice, Persian Sand, Contessa Gold & antelope are, IMHO three of the nicest standard colours for a big Torana.

This is another build that is on my watch list.

Keep the progress pictures coming, and good luck with it.

Cheers.

Found a couple more tucked away.
This must have been around 1988 i think.
This was when i first fitted the flares and we gave it a new coat of paint
I had dropped out to a mates place at Mt Hunter.

can't believe i got away with driving it around like that...
I look back and not only can't believe i did all that work to it. But what is more scary is i can't remember doing it.
At least i will have more pictures this time and my kids can remember it for me.

check out the uncut rear doors. These came back to bite me. cut the hell out of my brand new bridgestone 265's.

Had 2 weeks work in melbourne so i dropped out to see how the old girl was coming along.

I know everyone likes pictures.
very interesting to see what is underneath.
The coating on the plennum cover grill (gold sort of colour) like a zinc coating was strange.

Have not put anything in here for a while.
Car is still in melbourne.
Taking longer than i expected but "you can't rush art".
Well i keep telling myself that.

Any way bugger the kids. Santa came early this year.

I had a few weeks off and went through all the small bits and sent them off for
chrome and/or zinc plating. Also sent some stuff for sandblasting / powder coating.

very happy with the result. I would give them a 9 out of ten.
few things not perfect but still they did a good job.

even managed to sneak one in for the little torana. Finally got to put on my
Brad Merrick decal.

Removed the HQ manifold and put on a after market.
Picked up a correct carby and just awaiting the idle solenoid and bracket from zinc platers.
Micks heater hose brackets and wiring loom clips worked well.

Bridgestone Eargers. 245/50/14. To go on the hotwires with the 265's.
Was there ever a better tyre!

finished off the day like this. My son bought it for me.
bought a tear to my eye and made the beer taste better.
Could not help but think if Hanra when i took this.

Well there has been a sad turn of events in my cars restoration.

I did have the car at a company called Restoblast or rods and restos in melton Vic.

Guy by the name of john.

It has been there a total of 18 months and below is how i picked it up last week.

Guy basically has just walked away. All to hard.

in total he had 15 cars in his factory including some very collectable Xu1's.

(bath 72's bath 73's etc)

One of the reasons i took it there was because he came very highly recommended with respect to

torana's etc.

I actually feel like i have come out of it pretty clean. Sure i lost some money but I went through every part

i have and basically all i am missing is my small VIN tag.

Hoping this will turn up with the owner of the business now as he has all the stuff. But i am considering it missing

other than that every nut and bolt is there.

I asked them to leave the tags on the car but one of his moron employees took them off.

some of the other owners i met have lost heaps of bit and pieces including restored stuff they sent him to be fitted

and full sets of LJ glass.

Now the car is at Bayside customs in hastings, went and met Rusty there last week.

Seems professional company. Any one got any good stories about them.

hoping second time lucky.

I am not a malicious person at all but I hope the prick rots in hell.

I ended up with 2 boxes like on the ute full of the stuff he took of it.

Ooops. Malfunction with the quote function...................arrrgh.

I was to say, I have had the same situation with both a panel shop and ancillary services.

Just make the best effort Steve to get the tags back, it will be a sour point of your restoration if you dont.

Also was to say the picture I posted above was my inspiration to keep my hatch in Persian Sand II, though I have finally decided to go a brighter colour.

I will be adding a post of the restoration too when I get the car back from the second panel shop (16 months and counting), like you say it isnt worth adding a thread until some interesting bits start happening.

If you click on the link at the bottom of my post you will see some progress (and the original pictures of the sad old hatch prior to restoration)

Good luck with the new panel shop.

Thanks,

Yes i am hangind in there. It was soul destroying to go and get the car.

Yes the one small tag is still a sore point. Some people will think it was foolish to leave them on the

car. In hind sight yes it was. But it is only a 4 door SL. But is is my 4 door SL that i have had since September 86.

It is sad but some times i think you need to go in with the mind set of basically don't trust anyone.

Although i know there are good guys out there.

I still like the persian sand colour and that hatch looks awsome.

My kids and wife want me to do it another colour. They are not keen on PS MK II

if i was to go to another colour Atlantis blue is one i could do.

Already have a red one. One red one is enough.

anyway keeping my hopes high the one missing tag will turn up but i am already

considering it gone so if it does turn up i can only be surprised.

steve

Two questions Steve...

The plating work looks scmick, were you happy with their work? Can you PM me their details (or post here to give them a bit of free advertising).

245 & 265 Eager tyres, both sizes are hard to come by, 265s impossible, have you found a place to get them?

All the plating work was done by All metal bumpers at Ingleburn NSW

I am pretty sure what he does himself is bright chrome and he can metal finish.

Like stainless polishing, aluminium finishing etc.

The silver and gold zinc plating he sends out to someone else but i am not sure who it is.

Out of all the bits i had done i was happy with them all except the lower bonnet latch. Could have been better.

and i did not tell him to do the wiper motor in gold which was really my mistake.

so all in all the job was good.

everything in that picture is zinc except the 73 XU1 rocker cover and shifter.

As for the Eagers.. These 2 were the last 2 that antique tires in Perth had.

I had been watching them for a while and decided to just get them.

So he is out of them now.

I spoke to him about 265 and he said bridge stone have said they will never do them again...

What he did mention is he was toying with the idea of putting just the lettering on another tyre to get the look

Not sure how that would look but i like maybe others if he could get 265's i would buy 4.

Steve,

seems to be a problem with panel shops which i have experienced

,

one hand doing the talking whilst the other hand doing something completely different.

Hope the vin tag turns up.
