Ive removed the 4 nuts holding the retaining plate, is there a trick to getting the axles to pop out of the centre? Slide hammer (which i dont own)?

If its drum brake, flip the drum backwards and put a couple of wheel nuts on a couple of turns and use the drum as a slide hammer.

Yup.. slide hammer

Or... if your strong and the car is stable on the stands
Put a drum back on... back to front... and use it as a hold to yank them out by hand

Yeah I've never needed an actual slide hammer, just the reversed drum. Although sometimes you need to persist for a while and make sure the car is suspended securely!

Twisted axles are a pain in the ass though.. especially when there is 2 of them. lol

I might put the jack under it as well, its up on stands with the wheels under the body so it dosnt fall on my head whilst working on it.

Slide hammer would be handy, other wise could rig something up with a couple of pieces of tube and plate which is what I borrowed off a mate. It took a while and was bloody hard work. I gave up a couple of times too after spitting the dummy! haha, so dont fret if it takes quite a few attempts.

best thing is to take the wheels you've pulled off and put both of them under the chassis on either side. providing they aren't $3000 wheels.

i second everything everyone has said, finding the backwards drum to be the best option. usually they come out easy but sometimes they are a bit of a c^nt just be persistent.

I have tied rope to a sledge hammer and the axle flange and given it a big swing...but since then I have made a slide hammer utilising a massive truck suspension bush...never fails.

Pair of extra long screwdrivers and lever it out. Never failed me and a lot less violent than the slide hammer and its variants. No chance of buggered stud threads or car falling off stands either.

Iv'e had a couple of tough ones and found loosening the 4 axle nuts then put the wheel back on and hit the tyre with the largest rubber mallet i can find.

Leave at least 2 nuts on to catch the little sucker as it will want to go walk about.

The lever method has never failed me - even the partly twisted ones have come out, albeit with a little effort.
I guess a slightly built lad or ladette may struggle a little but works fine for me.

Has the diff been removed, recoed & refitted or have you only replaced axle bearings?
If you haven't had the diff out then nothing should have moved.

Have a look down the axle housing tubes with a good torch and see if you can see if the splines in the star gears & cones line up.
If they appear to be in alignment then it may just be the 'O' rings in the outer surface of the wheel bearings binding in the housing.
Lubricate the 'O' rings with a smear of diff oil and try again. Also make sure the axle seals are properly seated into the housing before you push the axle right in.

Worst case is remove the diff and check the star and side gear splines are aligned, if they aren't then you might need to take it to a diff repairer.

I don't know if you can realign the splines without dismantling the diff, someone more knowledgeable might.

Make sure when your putting in the axle its centre in the diff tube. Can slmetimes be a bit of a wiggle to get the splines to slide in.

the diff has not been removed, I'm just doing wheel bearings
I found a small torch and put it on a stick and I can see the spline that I can feel with the axle and I'm absolutely sure it is not the rubber ring on the bearing.

this is a diff axle problem and I have rattled shaken, rotated and hit with hammers for hours.

sorry that I don't think I can photograph the diff through the axle housing.

Still fighting

Is it both axles or just one that is being a pain?
Try with the O rings removed from the bearings, if the axle/s still won't go in then it's definitely not the O rings binding.

it is the same spline that came out or the diff for wheel bearings and I was careful not to swap axles

thanks

Did you take the old outer cones out of the housing ?

Banjo diff housings don't use tapered needle roller bearings so there will be no outer race left in the housing.
