Well I got an alternator off a VN (one on the left) to replace the current alternator, I'll swap the pulleys when i get a rattle gun but i'm a bit confused about the electrical plug swap? Is the LX alternator missing something?

Also took the radiator off and it's looking pretty sorry, might take it in to the rad place and see if it's worth fixing.

Found a pretty decent leak between the master cylinder and booster so i'm assuming both are gone and need replacing? would explain the full spongey brake pedal and explains why the rear section of the master was empty when I went to bleed the brakes.

Also would a moderator be able to change the thread title to something a little less loud like "lx hatch" ? Feels awkward with the capitals haha. Thanks

Good Luck with the Wiring Oliver,

Alloy Radiators are the go now for some reason,

and what are you doing in the back of the Hatch,

new carpet? or just a general clean out.

my WB has a leaking rear M/C tank

Cheers Dave. I've found a pretty helpful thread on another website that shows a clean bosch route, just needa invest in a soldering iron :)

Yeah I think replacing it with a new one is probably the way i'll end up going.

Just cleaning and replacing carpet eventually. That first picture is the before shot of the boot section and 2nd shot is after. Dunno how dad managed to get it so filthy.

Ah right, I haven't found any leaks on the torrie yet except for the master, radiator and carby (solved the carby issue after taking it apart and giving it a good clean with carby cleaner.)

Crikie Oliver,

I thought that was a ground shot of what came out of the Radiator, he he.

That first picture is the before shot of the boot section and 2nd shot is after.

Lovely mudguard brackets... don't think these will be going back on.

Radiator guy tested our rad and said it'd be 50-70bucks to repair, or 230 for a new plastic one thats a bit skinnier than the current one. As soon as he seen it he said "That's off an lx isnt it" haha

I wouldn't buy a Plastic Radiator Personally,

as I have had them before, and on a Car that was only 1 year old, the tank cracked,

also others here have had problems too.

Pay 50 buck's for the repair.  :spoton:

Ah okay, thanks I will :)

I'm currently deciding if I should just do it and get an engine crane and take the engine out for a decent maintenance and good chance to properly restore the engine bay to it's prior condition.

After seeing all the crap that was in the carby when I cleaned it i'm a bit worried about the state of the engine so yeah. What do you reckon?

Thanks

I have a Bosch 85amp VN type alternator in my Torana. The plug you mentioned will be a two pin & have a brown wire & a white wire if it's the same as mine. The brown wire is for your charge warning light or gauge on the instrument panel, the white is usually fusible linked to the positive terminal on the battery (as per factory Commodore), or you can loop it around onto the positive charge lead terminal on the alternator, which is how I wired mine. You can buy fusible link wire from a well stocked parts store or auto electrician, you won't need much if you loop it back to the alternator. Some people don't bother with the fusible link & just run the wire straight onto the positive terminal. Hope this helps

Hi mate, yeah the one i got has a brown and white wire like yours :) I think the way you have yours wired up is the same way the other guy my mate found found has his. Your description helps a great load though as i wasnt sure which wire was which. So cheers for that :)

Hi guys, been a bit busy the last few months as i've had my HSC exams but anyway ive decided to take out the engine to rebuild and repaint it aswell as the bay. I'm up to actually lifting it out now except the transmission wants to come out with it and prying it won't help. I think ive gotten rid of all the bolts from the bellhousing (2 up top and 2 on the sides) and the starter motor is removed also so yeah just after a bit of help.

I've pulled out the 202 and the gearbox with the help of a mate, engine numbers don't match with the car obviously because the motors a reconditioned one out of a HX so i'm contemplating putting a 308 in for the hell of it.

Would like to get some opinions from others on what to do. Could possibly make it an SS Hatch replica, guard flares are out of the picture.

G'day Oliver, I'd love to know how many full nut'n bolt rebuilds have started with somebody saying "I might just pull the engine out and paint the engine bay"...

Then "We've just gotta pull the guards and nose cone to fix the bonnet hinge mounts and radiator support panel"...

Then "Oh there's a bit of rust in the plenum and we need to pull the heater and brake booster anyway so lets pull the dash out too"...

Then the carpets are in the way so you pull the seats out... then the floor pan needs a tidy up... then "We need to freshen up the suspension so we may as well do that at the same time"...

I'm sure many reading this find that train of thought all too familiar!

Anyway, as far as the V8 idea goes, if you can find a donor car that has everything you need I'd say go for it, if you just have a motor and maybe a gearbox then you will be chasing up all the extra little bits for months.

V8's have different engine mounts, radiators, wiring looms, exhaust systems, clutch linkages (assuming a swap to manual gearbox), tail shaft, diff, coil springs, and the list goes on... but even if you find a 4.2L sedan you're halfway there with all the little things, everything mechanical is interchangeable between sedans and hatches so no worries there.

Not trying to talk you out of doing it by any means, in fact I'd love to see another V8 hatch on the road, just letting you know what you're in for. :)

Hey Andrew,

haha yeah it really has been like that for me. First started as:
"Let's just clean the carby"
"Let's just pull out the interior and lay new carpet down"
" Let's just pull the motor and box out to give them a respray and cleanup"
"let's just put a reconditioned yella terra head on while we're at it"

"lets just go 308 now that its all out"

Im still considering finding a yella terra head and keeping the 202, I'd like to get this project finished asap because i'll most likely be moving to melbourne for Uni next year and i just want to be able to enjoy the car already.

I love my V8s, but there's nothing wrong with a nicely-sorted 202. I reckon go with that or you will be heading to Uni with a garage full of Torana bits, rather than having driven it... Whack a turbo on it down the track or start stockpling 308 bits (as above there's alot more you need than just the engine and box) and do it all in one hit later.

Either that or get a smashed Commodore and go an LS-series V8. :-) By the time I finish mine, that's what I'll be wanting to do. Ha ha. You've got a great base there. never sell it. :-)

Hi Sam,

You're exactly right and i can really see that being the probable outcome if i do go down the 308 track.

I think i will just find a reconditioned yella terra head and go from there. I've got a panel beater planned to come over this weekend to have a look at the rust holes and dings, things should be moving a lot faster once the car is on a trailer heading towards his place for all the bodywork to be done next month or so

Cheers, Oliver
