A bit of a question for you gear slammers on Hurst or Mr Gasket V gate shifters.

Are the shifters the same from toploader to Muncie etc,but with different mounting brackets and linkages,or are they completely different?

Im casually in the market for one to suit a Muncie, and was thinking if I saw one for the right price at a swapmeet for a toploader ,should I grab it.

Thanks in advance.

I've got a Mr Gasket vertical gate from my old torana. It was from a muncie, but I bought a top loader mounting kit and in it went, as my car had a top loader. I only have the shifter left though, no fitting hardware.

Think of a price and let me know.Im hopeless at making offers.

Im having trouble finding an install kit, Hurst dont list them on their website that I can see ,neither do Mr Gasket.

Do they even make them any more?

The V gate that I got fitted to the Saginaw was originally from a top loader. I just made the mounting bracket to suit the Saginaw/Muncie then made the shift rods from 3/8" stainless. Also laid the bracket over slightly so the top of the shifter is in the centre. I'll see if I got any pics.

Ya, but everything in America is 7% off for you now. :badabing:

(I put a vertigate in a big block '69 Dodge Dart I had built way,way back when...sure had to chop a decent hole in the floor for it, but was a cool conversation piece at least )

yeh a mate put one in his Ls Monaro once, i did all i could to talk him out of it because of hole cutting needed,
it was easier for the passenger to change gears. That hole put me right off.

I enjoyed the V gate for the novelty that it was, but in all honesty they're a pain in the ass. They have a MASSIVE throw on them. From first to second, and all other gear changes I guess, you have to move the stick a good 6+ inches.

I'd recommend a Hurst Indy H pattern if you want quick changes. That's what I had before the V gate on my top loader, and after 6 months of the V gate I'd well and truly had enough of it and put the Indy back on. Smiles all round : )

Just my opinion.

i agree with dirtbag,

the vertical gate is painful, espesially when going from 3rd back to 2nd,it is not a shifter for the street, drag only,i,ve got the verticle in the blue monaro.

i have a mr gasket H patern on a muncie,it is brilliant, very small H patern,it is much better than the verticle gate.

I have a T56, so a vertigate for me anymore is a moot point. Modern boxes sure shift nice...(mine has a factory SS, Hurst shifter on it) but as said, the old 4 speed with the verti was interesting...

Ive run one on a poxloader on the street in the past as well, and yep,on the street they are a nightmare.

Youd have bleeding fingers after a good city drive...

This will be for strip only, and I want one coz when you rip gears with them,it is so much fun.

The size of the hole in the floor wont matter a bit,as the tunnel will be replaced to fit the box anyway.

Craig,is the H pattern better on the upshift as well,or just a better because of the downshift?

i found the H pattern just as quick,if not quicker as the H is so small, the up shift to 3rd very quick, the vertical has a very long throw from 1st to 2nd ,2nd to 3rd and 3rd to4th, i prefer the very small H pattern for race and street.

Hi wot179, I can't find the pics that I have & you can't see enough when it's fitted in the car. The bracket that I made lays over 15-20 from vertical, towards the driver.

I've now got some pics of the shifter bracket, as I had to remove the trans due to a loose flywheel during the 6 banger Nats.
The bracket is tilted approx 8-10 from vertical & the bolt in the last pic was a prototype bolt, I ended up using "button head" cap screws.

Is yours a Hurst warren?

Attached File  MrGasket.jpg   342.87K   1 downloads

sold this Mr G last year complete with boot & plate plus
fitting kits for early muncie, late muncie & BW T10 for
$300 last year. Got a old VPW cat around somewhere I think
they were priced around $250+ for the shifter & 90 for each
fitting kit but its a fairly old cat.
Used to run it in my HQ many years ago with a welded 4.11 Dana 60
& yeah got sick of after a while on the street.

Hi tried them both and found the Hurst V-gate to be a smoother shifter and more feel to it.
I moved the hole shifter about 75 to 100mm forward on a 12mm solid plate and shorten up the rods to shorten the throw .It worked well but alot of trial and errror but improved the throw no end.

To be honest u soon get over them.Floor has to be widen as well.

I then went to a hurst h pattern and was just as quick and more enjoyable to work with.
Dont for get the hole in the plate for the reverse rod mmm if you move it forward. yep fell for that one.

Just my three cents worth. But they are good fun till the noverty weres off.
