This is the only pic I can find at the moment. You can see from LH with the chrome smile (hands off hanra!) the concept of the equal edge around the radiator intake at the top of the spoiler. On LX this was simply blacked out, and chrome deleted, although most people leave it painted body colour.

But I neeeeed it........ :-(

You could try the acid type mag wheel cleaner (for rims without clear coat) to even up the lustre on the steering rack ends. Personally if I wanted to keep the alloy finish then I would just paint them with an alloy finish silver and then you wont need to touch them again.

I think the rear mount K-MAC swaybar is best suited to cars with the exhaust exiting before the diff like the race cars it was designed for.

If you have a fuel tank (standard or drop) in the standard position then your only real options is to run the exhaust under the diff and around the swaybar or exit at the back off the wheel like litre8.

Oh crap.
Those options don't really entice me.
I dug it out and yep, it looks to be a rear fit rear anti-sway bar...
Thanks for your help on this and for your ideas re: the alloy finish.

Anyone have a pic of a non OEM front fit rear anti-sway bar just for comparison's sake?

Cheers, TB

The front fit type bolts to the floor inbetween the lower arms just infront of the diff hump and is only about 700mm wide.

I have my exhaust exit in front of the tires...so I would have room for that sort of bar....too bad it won't fit in an envelope haha...

I think you will find that it is not legal in any Australian state to have the exhaust finish before the diff. The regs usually specify that the exhaust must exit after the last window that can be opened.

You will find pictures of the Whiteline and K-MAC front mount rear swaybars at the bottom if this page

I thought the ruling was a minimum distance in relation to the rearward edge of the door. It the hatch that is beneficial.

I know the NCOP does not apply in all states but I expect the wording would be similar. I did consider changing the rear windows so they could not be opened.

NCOP3 Section LA Engine V2 01Jan2011.pdf

See page 9.

The outlet of an exhaust system must be rearwards of any passenger side entry door or opening window.

For what is worth the diff mounting brackets in this picture need to swap sides.

If you want to sell it let me know. And the ruleing in OZ is the exhaust must exit the rear of the car, They also give you a measurement but can't remember what it is exactly. aproxly 60-100mm just enough to burn your leg on. LOL

The exhaust does not have to exit the rear or a Torana under the NCOP. ADR 42 does have more restrictions but it only applies to vehicles manufactured after 1/7/92. Even under ADR 42/03 1/7/98 the exhaust is allowed to exit the right hand side of the vehicle as long as it complies with the other rules.

The outlet of an exhaust system must be rearwards of any passenger side entry door or opening window. If any part of the exhaust system, including the outlet pipe, extends beyond the profile of the body (other than on the underside), it must be shielded. Exhaust outlets must also meet the requirements of ADR 42/… where applicable. Vehicles manufactured after June 1988 must not have the exhaust exiting to the left of the vehicle.

That's my understanding too and thanks again - you've flicked me that link before but I never thought to look at it for this issue.

Thanks for the tip.

If you want to sell it let me know...

By all means make an offer - I don't think I want to use it now.

Cheers, TB

After some too-ing and fro-ing I have decided to go with the 9" rear axle that came with the car.
Sorry Welby - I couldn't wait any longer on what you are tee-ing up over west and in any case, trying to save some coin where I can.
The centre is a 2.75 but I was told it is locked - No further detail.
This morning I got it into pieces - one of the nuta that retains the axle was a bastard and I was left taking to it with a chisel.
In any case, this is the centre.

Questions arising:
What have I got here?
Is it worth trying to sell?
If so, what is a reasonable ask for it?

And bloody hell they are heavy - lifting the rear axle onto some saw horses was an effort and jeepers the centre would have to be half the weight - guess this is why they are reported to be so darned strong!

Cheers, TB

If you are going to use a 9" diff, why do you want to sell the diff centre? You only need to get another set of diff gears to change the ratio, if that's what needs changing.
The ratio will be stamped around the crown wheel.(large rear)

Thanks for that; I'll have a look for the ratio.
As for changing it, like I said; it is a locked diff and so not what I am after - LSD is enough for me.

Hi TB
re rear sway bar set up, I have seen guys on here use a old Commodore pre-independent, the advantage was it mounted on the diff and to the floor of the car so worked better then a factory standard one which mounts on the rear lower trailing arms

I got stuck into the 9" axle housing today with the wire wheel - what a job that was!

Gone from this;

To this;

And finally this;

Still not finished - going to have to shoot some garnet into the crevises and inside of the mounts for the shock absorber and bump stop brackets. It won't fit inside the small blasting cabinet I have but the media inside is 'tired' and so I'll shoot it outside of the cabinet and see how I go.

I've been cleaning many bits and pieces to date with Turps but lately I've given Kero a go having learned you use it inside of parts cleaner tanks, and the difference is amazing - wish I'd cottoned on to this sooner.

Cheers, TB

Hi Yella.
Thanks for the interest and sorry no, not much to report really.
Where is that other Torana of your's at?

Just had no time with my car - work was flat-out leading up to and through Easter, then school hols and Daddy Daycare including hosting some overseas visitors whilst being under the pump from the bride to turn my attention to the neglected yard and building works about the place, and finally getting through my uni work - yep, you heard right and you'd think I know better at my age... And so chuck in the procrastination about the rear end and it all adds up to a couple of months passing with nothing to show for it really, perhaps some minor fiddling about the fringes but nothng worth mentioning! I have however written and had accepted the first two of a five part build article by The Aussie Muscle Enthusiast Magazine (not on my car).

On the rear-end; the good news is unclefestal34s has a 9" 3.25 LSD diff centre I've committed to, and I have finally gotten some paint on the axle housing. Fingers crossed I will start putting it all in the car within a couple of weeks - need to clean up and paint the axle ends, collect the new diff centre before launching into a complete once-over of the accompanying drum brakes.

I have however been using my time to lurk about the forum, especially so in a number of build threads here - threads by hanra, lxsstorana, derrin71, berro59, jonesy, 76lxhatch and A9XOSS immediately come to mind.

Thanks again, and I promise to post once more when I have something meaningful to show.

Cheers, TB

I call it 'Torana Time' Yella - for which one needs to earn 'Torana Tokens' in order to access the same, and said earnings seemingly arise through a vested interest and effort towards more mundane and domestic related chores which for some reason never seem to make it into my top ten of things needing attention... The 'ordinary' side of which being it seems to be the ratio of time earned on 'Torana Time' via these 'Torana Tokens' is but one quarter to one fifth of the time spent on the said domestic chores!

That covert photo is enticing - the track stripes remind me of VE to some extent - a car I owned until recently and which is still very close to my heart. From my recollection the issuing of 'track stripes' is fitting to the purpose of the car depicted in that photo? I am looking forward to future reveals.

Cheers, TB.
