Update time I guess.
Had a blast at TF even though my car had a 'broken heart' - seemed to be pretty well received in any case - thanks for the support of all.
Pretty glad I took it there in the end, despite making the rookie mistake of leaving the keys at the motel and having to go back for them in order to unload it...
And so after TF (early October) I took it down to Melbourne for a week to see my engine builder - wonderful fellow - all being repaired under warranty.
Jeepers you have a lot of speed cameras down there:
Turns out there was lots of damage and it is sill not clear why/how it all went wrong.
Doesn't mater in the end as far as I am concerned - that it is being made right is what is important to me.
A couple of the bores were badly scored:
Crank and bearings not doing too well either:
Lots of machining work required as it turned out and so I had to come home empty:
Update as at yesterday afternoon suggests maching work due back mid week and re-assembly to start perhaps at the weekend before running in and dyno.
Thereafter it will be brought home to me which is very kind of the engine builder.
In addition, the engine builder didn't like my exhaust manifold (think cheap arsed unit) and so had had them HPC coated (at his own expense) merely because he couldn't bring himself to stick such poor looking headers back in when the time comes - very, very kind of him.
The engine has nothing on the gearbox however.
It wailed like an air-raid siren during that all-too short first drive.
You may or may not recall some banter come pointed discussion between a few of use and the proporietor of Aussie 4 Speed Specialists: http://www.freewebs....speeds/home.htm
This thread here pretty much says it all: http://www.gmh-toran...ussie-4-speeds/
Well it seems my fancy and supposedly new component $2k M21 'race box' is far, far from the same.
Just a cursorary peek into it shows worn/high mileage first and second gears, synchros bottomed out in 1st and all but in 2nd and 3rd, and the list goes on.
Can't wait to see what comes out when it is properly pulled down.
Suffice to say, old-mate Peter Zitis has seemingly swallowed his tounge now that I am seeking (proper) remedy.
The thing that really annoys me - he came down from Sydney to fix it - I gave him the benefit of the doubt thinking he had gone to a considerabble degree of effort to remedy the matter and felt positve about the whole ordeal.
The reality being that he brought bugger all parts despite saying he would bring the whole she-bang to deal with whatever amounted, but then get this - he stood in my garage, looked into this gearbox and knowing I have bugger-all knowledge about gearboxes, he stood there and to my face told me it was a component failure of the case hardening at 2nd gear - he stood there and told me a fist full of untruths knowing full bloody well that he had built me a gearbox which he had slapped together a whole lot of second-hand worn rubbish but flogged it off as new and a very special/clever build on his part.
And on top of this, he had the temerity to complain to me that my prior comments per the above link had cost him a couple of T5 sales - for telling nothing more than the facts! You look at the photo and you be the judge - my commentary/opinion prior and hereafter need not even be considered other than to say;
1. A picture tells a thousand words, and
2. That gearbox you are looking at is his $2k best...
Until and if this cretin does the right thing, I very much look forward to showing all what I learn when this gearbox is pulled down and portrays the conduct of this cretin.
In any case, celebrate the winsa as they say and in that regard, notwithstanding Peter Zitis every having darkened my door, I have done very, very well.
Until next time, adios amigos
Cheers, TB

Good poimt Rexy - think it was on it's way to that however...
Like I said, the engine builder is TCB and for that I am very, very thankful and in his debit.

Not as yet Rexy,
Just these last few days it went back in, was run in again and did some work on the dyno for the new bores.
Having an issue with the rear brakes to fix when it comes home, but should go on the dyno to pull a number really soon - maybe today.
Fingers crossed, might get it home very soon.
Got these photos last night - missed a call pretty late afterwards - I was in bed for a 5am start and so also might have some more news tonight...
Cheers, TB

Thanks Daz,
Very kind of you.
Just got to work out how/when to get it home - it can stay at the workshop until this happens and will be a-okay there.
Found out the dyno result - 252rwhp - pretty happy about that esp. out of a wee .221 cam.
Just waiting on the video of it on the dyno now - happy days

Awesome stuff

Excellent! Pretty impressed with the engine builder's response, too. Everyone makes mistakes, it's how you deal with them that counts. This cost you time, but hopefully got you a better bit of work in the end. :-)

That is what makes this whole thing even more excellent Sam - it is still not clear what/why things went as they did, and despite this, the engine builder is still standing by the failure as a warranty matter. Remember this is an engine that sat in my shed and car for quite some time before being turned over and still he has stood by - I am indebited to him.
I'll see if I can't work out ho to post the dyno-pull video...
Bout time the Torry featured in your Avatar :-)
Only when I can sort out how to do it Gez - Right now, I haven't a clue sorry.
Until then, the L98 in my old VE SSV will have to do for mY avatar - 333.3rwkw NA is still something to brag about even if I don't own it anymore...
Geez it was a good looking rooster that car, and the sound, oh, the sound!

333.3, half evil?
I bet the grunt the Torry has in a car 26 tonnes lighter will make you forget all about that plastic POS mate
Cheers.

I give up - a link to the Torana on the dyno is the best I can do - enjoy!

I hear you Bomber - took the 'plastic POS' it to the track at Sutton Road a while back - it was underwhelming in the twisty stuff, but it still made for a heap of fun, and pulled brilliantly when revved out:
