Yeah, not much to report sorry - I've been bloody busy at work for several days now what with Convoys of no Confidence/Consequence and the like, but I do have some 'Torana Time' booked for several days starting Monday.
We hope to have it done and dusted in a couple of weeks with it a Rourkey's shop about 12th Sep for the coloured paint on the outside.
This next week coming should see some significant change in appearance - no more drab grey.
Inside going into paint (gloss black) right after the bottom (stone-guard finish with gloss black over).
If all goes well including the weather, we should get the engine bay and even the door openings into colour by the end of next week.
I promise I'll have some new pics up Monday evening so show progress.
Sorry to hear your's has been delayed Brett - explains why I haven't been able to find anything on it of late.
As your post for me - please keep us posted on how it is coming when you get a chance - as I've said previously, there are a couple of build threads going on right now (your's included) that I watch for inspiration, motivation, ideas and the like. Plus she's a great looking car - I mean just have a look at that picture you posted - fan-bloody-tastic! And that's a before shot right? Can't wait to see what it will be like when done.
All the best, TB

Make one, you would be surprised how damn easy they are to make. As somebody with no trade quals, if I can do it, anybody can.Hi, Love the progess pictures, wish i had a rotissorie for my car makes life so much easier
keep up the good work and keep the pics coming

Mmm, SS blackouts. Must say, I've always been a fan of blackouts. If your going to do it, just make sure you reflect it on the flares, it looks a bit odd when you don't. Example below (wonder which car it is?). Black runs up and over back of rear and front flares.
Sting, god you guys down there have a few Torries. LXChev366 has a flock of Torries as well.

As requested/promised - some further progress reports.
Dave got back to it today - wish I was there to see it but I'll will be elbow deep with him from Monday.
Brush-on seam sealer for that 'oh-so factory look';
Bottom into stone-guard and gloss black over;
I know this isn't correct for the front apron but we thought;
1. Why have that ugly-ish and half-arsed black-out over some of the colour on the front of the apron, and
2. Why not go stone-guard on the lower radiator support panel (front) and gloss black the entire front apron for longevity?
And so, this is what has been done;
And so here it is, right-way up;
I love it and can't wait to see it in the flesh Monday.
The stone guard paint will also go inside the front fenders, inside the sills, inside the chassis rails, inside the doors, inside the rear quarters and on the inside of the floor - all my best long term and low maintenance attempts at rust prevention.
Cheers, TB

Interesting to see that the hatches still have the spare tyre bulge!!! Doesn't really show it, but underneath, you'd swear it was a four-door, so similar (he says after 800 sanding every square inch).

...although I probably would have waited till after the colour to paint the brush-on seam sealer.
Nah, I wanted it under the stone guard and under the colour - looks tidier IMO.
I may be confused, but where did you seam seal?
Everywhere it seems. Anywhere where the metal butts up to another bit (flat or in corners), overlaps each other and the like; the brush-on seam sealer went on.
Have a look at that first photo (below) - you'll see it everywhere there - the darker lines running about the floor.
It's also right through the engine bay and the inside of the car including the plenum chamber and heater-box area.
To keep it neat and tidy, we applied tape either side of the seam, painted the sealer on and removed the tape.

As is the norm it seems for a number of your posts - criticisms couched in one liners, or in this case one word, without any whys or wherefore's following...
It's not my idea to do this but to the uninitiated like me it seems a good idea on the face of it, and so a genuine question from me if I can coax your from unexplained derision come one-up-manship toward wee plebs like myself - why not?
Again, I am genuinely interested in your thoughts given your panel and paint knowledge/experience is seemingly well regarded here.
Cheers, TB

I personally wouldnt use stone guard in those areas for a number of reasons.
1: its hard to get an even coat of primer in those areas. Stone guard has absolutely no anti corrosive properties, its purely a rubberised chip resistant coating designed to be used OVER a primer and UNDER a top coat. Its also got a pretty piss poor adhesion to bare metal, it will peel off.
2: it would also be hard to get an even coat of stone guard in those areas.
3: cavity wax would serve your purpose far better.
4: cavity wax will not only cover the areas better, and protect any bare metal thats not painted better, without peeling off like stone guard will, it will also penetrate the seams and get in between two bits of metal butted up against each other, unlike stone guard.
Could prolly think of a few more reasons if that doesnt convince you mate, but that covers the majority of it IMO.
Cheers.

Cavity Wax it is!

Whilst its on the rotissary would be the best time, as you will be able to roll it around a bit after you put it in. It will still flow for an hour or so after application.
That said it will be a bit of a pain where it runs out on areas that are yet to be painted. Prepsol gets it off ok though. Just extra effort. Generally you would put the cavity wax in after painting.
And this reminds me i need to borrow that nice 20lt drum of Tectyl 506 i have at work and go to town on my LJ......
Cheers.

Here you go Yella - there is brush on seam sealer on both of those joins and glad we did it under the stone guard and black gloss because the stuff is army coloured green in any case;
The inside is finished now too
And even the dash is done;
Spent today wet rubbing the engine bay and door openings - I don't have a clue how you guys who do this everyday and have your finger tips left - mine are killing me and not looking forward to rubbing the hatch open tomorrow!!
Weather permitting we'll have some colour on tomorrow in the engine bay and door openings, and plan to get it off the rotisserie Wednesday. Dave and I have our mojo back because progress seems to being made once again. We know it was happening all along just that for good parts of it all you have little to show for it at the end of the day.
Cheers, TB

And 12 months - I sincerely hope you are kidding me. Not sure it will be a better job when done, but I have to be a tad bold and say I don't think there are many that would go past what Dave is doing in the prep for painting. If the end result isn't A+ it has nothing to do with Dave's work and all to do with the painter. Proof of this is he won't let me within six feet of the exterior panels when it comes to rubbing them down - and I am not kidding about the six feet!

From this (By God that primer was smooth after all the wet rubbing - either that or I have my fingertips are devoid of 'tread' and I have no sense of touch left!;
To this;
And thisl
The only 'poor' outcome being the colour. I'd feared that Mint Julep never seems to come out well in photos as the colour in the flesh always seems to 'pop' whereas in photos it always looks dull. My fears have been realised - the photos just don't and think can't do the colour justice - it is really deep and full if you get my meaning?
The good news is I finally found a good use for 'The Canberra Times' newspaper - surely the worst paper in the country likely attributable to that tosser Jack Waterford. In any case, the broadsheet is a decent size, and whilst not the size of The London Times, nevertheless a CT edition covers a lot of car!
And finally another pic for Yella SLuR re: seam sealer going under paint - I am by far anything like an expert on panel & paint let alone Toranas but I think this,
a looks right and
b must surely be right - as over the top it would be bloody ugly and surely defeat the purpose or have I missed something?
Regardless - it's too late now!;
Cheers, TB

Kermit
Bastard - you've set me up!
You cheeky bugger - last time I listen to you mate, and oh, how about we paint your's 1918 just to be sure it's 'proper'!!!
And whilst we are at fixing things - you've gotta drive some time my friend and when you do...brick city!
Seriously, and in complete contrast to your most juvenile jibes totally lacking in couth, decorum, original thought nor any semblance of decency let alone mate-ship - I am pretty happy with it - won't stop me from always wanting a Palais white one but happy enough - I ain't doing this again that is for sure!
Thanks for the stir Gerry - you are always good for it...bastard...
Cheers, TB
