Thanks Andrew, i actually bought a 750 proform before you replied so hopefully ok! dare say it will need down jetting
Only reason i red the 750 proform is actually a better carb than the 650 proform? (downleg boosters)

Matt I seen your car up for sale on Ebay a few weeks ago, did you sell it?
Posted 25 May 2014 - 07:39 AM
No, too many low ball offers & people asking to swap for other cars. I had wicked thoughts of pumping the money I was asking for it into an even wilder combo for my red Torana but thought better. I may fit a stock 5ltr to the SL/R & put the 355 into the red car, the SL/R is too nice a car to start bashing on a drag strip & fitting roll cages etc.

Smart thinking mate....Glad you decided to keep it!

its been a while since there has been action on this page.
there is a group of us out there that for some reason that we don't probable understand ourselves let alone others seem to stick with the standard stroke 308.
now my engine has been out for a freshen up the past few months but the intention was while its out to park the iron efi heads and fit alloys. im happy coz I have been able to make this happen, main reason approx. 25kgs less weight high up over front wheels,
knock on affect is compression has been pushed to 11 to 1 and these heads from indications should also flow a little more, happy days.
be a month, more than likey till I can get it back on dyno, hoping to crack the 400 rwhp with a standard stroke 308, if not oh well, ill survive

Hey Guys and Gals,
I have 308/355 stroker Holden engine in a Hatchback.
When you talk about the Spacer/Carby do you mean placing this spacer between the manifold and carby. What does this do the the fuel going to the engine and why do you have a spacer.
I have heard about them but don't understand the concept of it. Please can someone explain this to me as i am not running any spacer at all.? This might bring up some more HP.?
Thanks,
Russell

Spacer between the carb and the inlet manifold can serve several purposes. A spacer will effectively increase the volume of the inlet manifold. If your engine has the capacity to consume more air & fuel then this is a simple way of increasing the air (and fuel - provided your carb is big enough for your engine).
Also if you have a dual plane manifold and you put an open spacer then you are allowing both sides of the carb to feed all intake ports. This can have benefits for hp and torque but may shift the peak torque higher up the rev range.
A spacer can also help isolate the carb fro the 'hot' inlet manifold, which in-turn heats the air and fuel coming into the engine. Cool air and fuel is denser which means you can fit more in which means more to burn and more power.
Generally a spacer will increase power by a percentage of what you are already producing. I thinks its safe to say that on standard-ish motors a spacer and a free flowing air filter could bring 10%. If you are making 200hp then 20 hp - cheapest power gain out there.
Hope that helps.
Cheers, Scott

Yep, understand now, all sound like a good plan for me.
Thanks,

I haven't been on this site for a while but it is good to see there is still some love for the stock stroke 308 !

Yep agree Struggler.
Mods can we make this thread a sticky? It always seems to pop up time and time again and has good relevant info in it.

dynoed my engine about a month or so ago. Consists of the following
0.20" flat top sbc pistons
hemi rods
offset ground holden 308 crank (cubes works out to be around 319)
also have four bolt mains conversion and oil drain backs cleaned up aswell as inside the valley
cam is custom solid roller . 258 - .264 @50 .650" intkae .620" exhaut 108ls
heads are heavily ported early ones by Pete at horsepower engineering in brisbane along with a ported stripmaster intake and 750 Quickfuel DP
Engine made 470hp at 7100rpm and holds that power to 7500rpm and 370ftlb torque.
will be swapping out the small stroker for a 355 this year!

Sounds like a tough engine there Ryan, 7500rpm is nice. I would swap to a set of worked VN heads on that combo before changing to a 355, you will probably loose close to 1000rpm going to 355
Yeah im hearing you mate but in saying that these heads i have spent decent money on mate, with a 355 it should make 520hp which i would be happy with, will bring the torque figures up also which would be great!!!
Current heads are flowing in the mid 240's at .600" lift so there decent heads in my opinion. Plus i already have the ported manifold and decent cam ect.... so i think i would rather leave it early headed for now and see what it can make with the extra cubes. I think if it made the 520hp in a perfect world it could run a very high 10 second pass in the stinking VL!

I dunno a high comp baby stroker with early heads is rare thing these days...they rev hard & sound off it's tits lol.
What's rest of driveline? Stally? Trimatic & 4.11 borgwarner?
HPE does good work. What are they like at time frames returning work/parts?
To go 355ci & efi heads may as well completely build another engine...

CR is 11.3 :1 Auto is manualised trimatic 5500rpm TCT convertor and 3.9 borgy with a spool. Still have to put a decent exhaust on it. Will be a twin 3" with x pipe as requested by HPE
My head work and manifold work took a while as i was not in a rush but once i was ready for them they where done in a decent time frame. Took a bit longer than liked but they where in the middle of moving there shop and was christmas rush so that did not help! All in all very happy with his work and worth the wait, He is building my decent engine for my torana,Big cube SBC
Yeah Like said just want to do a 355ci bottom end mate and stick with the early heads just to get me over 500hp. Currently it's showing just over 1.4hp per cube so with the extra cubes it should make 520hp with a 355

Glad this thread keeps getting rehashed. Again I ask the MODS to make this a STICKY THREAD as it is great to refer too. As for your engine combo Ryan, good red heads can flow enough to make big power. Out of the box VN heads are a better set up but I have personally had 308 red heads that would be good for 450hp. Be interesting to see if you can get your 500hp out of yours. My current 355 set up with VN heads is well over 500+ HP...Friggin awesome to drive :-) Keep us posted bud!!!
Agreed mate, mods need to make this a sticky! Helps blokes out as alot of combos that get thrown up are proven which means less threads about the same thing need to be made!!!!
The heads i have a vk black heads mate, the heads have been extensivly ported. Ill add a link to them from aussie v8. Just put a new timing curve in it today as im running a msd 6al-2. Set total at 26 degrees and inital at 16 but total timing comes in at 800rpm. Car is abit doughy down low (which is more carb related i think) but jesus christ it feels like a different engine up top. Did have 30 degrees total but i think the engine is liking 26 degrees more!!!
Will definantly make over 500 with 355 cubes. Only issue is they only make a 1 5/8" primary extractor for commodores with early heads. Really needs 1 3/4" extractors. may have to get some custom made!

Been reading this thread find it great so thought i may join up and say hi
Really good post from few years ago still going, hence no posts past 5 months so i thought i may nudge it along
Iv been building an lx 4 door for 3 years and thought i may share engine components bla bla bla
If anyone has any idea of what rwhp it may produce would be appreciated.
Vn 304 Stroked 355

Hi guys just an update on my combo. Just to update it is a stock stroke bottom end, .060 over, flat top pistons, HQ red heads l34 spec, 5803 solid cam and a 750do holley. One of the changes made was to remove the 2" hvh spacer and fitted a 1" hvh spacer which made a little difference. Since last post have added a cold intake tray, a bonnet scoop and just some tuning. Also had to make some changes to the car, changed rear springs and couple of tweaks to the front end. Have managed to get a new pb of [email protected] at Willowbank.
