If its still the factory loom it will be the brown wire. I soldered mine in and heat shrunk it just off the alternator. Yep, just see an auto elec and explain your setup as I can't remember what diode I used. You absolutely can tell which way to fit them tho, there is no trial and error involved.

No probs... thanks...

Yes, It seems to be standard loom so will chase something down.... I went down to the auto elect yesterday but he was shut so will chase a diode up...

This is the twin plug that plugs into the alt...

so the brown wire? thanks very much!

Hi all..

I had a play with the diode thing... got hold of one down at the auto sparky place... eventually.... wired it in but still having some issues....

this is what I got....

diode_zpsy34kjxxs.jpg

I wired it in series to the brown wire...

 diode1_zpscqokz1uh.jpg

after getting it the right way, it shuts off good but the charge light on the dash stays on and is not charging... so does that mean I try the blue wire or is there other issues to deal with?

Cheers

Given you still have the blue wire you must be running a standard externally regulated alternator. I would suggest upgrading your alternator. You have a fairly good engine combo, do you plan to run a thermo or an ignition box like MSD at all? I upgraded to a VN 85 amp alt. Delete the blue wire, only need the charge light (brown) wire and the charge wire to the battery. Have had no issues at all.

Hi ya Adam..

Yes... Im still running an external reg and what seems to be the original alternator... I wasnt planning of running thermos but saying that, its winter... so will see what happens when the weather warms up.... atm... it seems fine... I guess the more things I need to run off the battery will determine if I need an alternator upgrade or not....

As for a MSD, im happy enough with the ignition set up for now.... i was just trying to put something together for a bit of fun and reliability... never thought Id have so much problem trying to get 12 volts to the coil!!! lol....

Thanks for the heads up on yr alternator upgrade... will keep that in mind if I upgrade...

Cheers

Hi all...well... as much fun as I was having driving the new rocket.... it was all short lived unfortunately....

As well as it all went... I noticed puffs of blue smoke out the back... not good for a fresh engine.. I had a good hunch of where it was coming from too by the symptoms... anyway... wont bore you with the details so off came the head and this is what I found along the way....

20160831_122953_zpssmiknmhn.jpg

20160831_125319_zpsyzka7jdv.jpg

I found oil where it should not be!!!

fca566fe-ee16-4b8d-8bdd-38b9c1d2cbe0_zps

Anyway... the guys were very good about it all and when they tore it down, they noticed the valve seal, which on a blue motor are "O" rings inside the guide, were not doing anything and oil had the right of way down there into the cylinders.... Due to some mods they did to the head, the standard stuff did not work.... so, they machined all the post's and fitted the old style outside caps and that should sort it....

At work atm so will get it together when Im home...

Cheers

:3gears:

The good old O ring stem seals can't stop the oil that gets splashed off the valve cap.

You need the positive lock stem seals as they have now fitted if you don't run the metal splash shields under the caps.

Cheers Dave...  he didnt really say why things happened... he did tell me they couldnt fit the splash shields due to the type of valve spring they used...  Im no head expert... well... dont know much at all so thats why people like me place allot of trust in people that are supposed to know....

I take my hat off to them though... he had no probs sorting the issue out under warranty even though it was some time ago he did the head work for me...  all good now....

Good to hear they recognised their mistake and rectified the issue without any fuss. If more people/businesses were like that the world would be a much better place.

Cheers

Dave.

Cheers

Mate, i think you're spot on, we have to experience the bad in some people to see the good in other's. It's a real pity, but it's just how life sometimes goes & apparently that's how we live and learn! Doesn't stop the disappointment though & cars & houses can Teach You some hard & expensive lessons. But it can also forge some great friendships & rewarding times. Keep your chin up mate, you're almost there. Gary.

On another point, how many people are sick & tired of no matter what you buy nowadays the quality is rubbish, even the Australian product is going down hill very rapidly & it's not cheap ! That's the 1 thing that makes me cranky. I buy the dearer aussie product for quality & it's to chinese quality. Even the yanks are complaining about their stuff going the same way. Grumpy.

very true mate...  you live and learn... dont get me started on the quality of stuff these days... Grrrr..... and have you noticed that everything is smaller but the price is the same!!

All good... we get through it all... we have adopted allot of the old values of make stuff yourself, give everything a go yourself and stash as much $$$ away from the Mrs to spend on our cars!!! lol...  its times like these the mrs notches another one of the "I told you that you are wasting money"  I hate it when she is right at times.... but Ill give her this one........ Grrrr..

Cheers

Do you know if the rubber O rings are fitted to the stems still? I have just rectified a situation similar to yours. My head has always had the positive seals. Used to run single springs, O rings and splash shields with no issues. Wanted double springs and a bit more shaved off head. Head place fitted springs, but no O rings and no splash shields. Big puff of blue smoke on cold start every time. So.... I fitted O rings and splash shields and now no more blue smoke. Im not sure the positive seals alone can stop all the oil getting past. Wait and see how yours goes I guess. I cant see why splash shields won't fit on yours. It will alter installed height and seat pressure slightly but you can get offset collets if you need to compensate.

The top one is the fresh one.... Very happy with the job and will finish the info in the diff section on the forum where I started it asking for contacts...

diff1_zpsydijt0tv.jpg

So happy to tick that one off the list... the list is getting smaller....

Does anyone know why the difference in the crown wheels? Is it time line/car models or brand of gears? there is a groove in one where the stampings are....

Cheers

Just a thought, may be some sort of a stress relief 😞 but i wouldn't know, they're already stamped with the ratio so why machine an edge if it wasn't thought beneficial in some way! But i may be way of track. Gary.
