Go tripping round the place?
I sure did. I took your advice and spent our time in Auckland on the north shore, we stayed at the Spencer on Byron at Takapune and had a great view of both Lake Pupuke and the beach.
We drove down to Rotorua spent a night there at the Novotel, had a great view of the lake - I find if you ask early to give you the best view possible they do accommodate.
We then drove to Otorohanga to visit the kiwi house, then off to the Waitomo Caves then drove to New Plymouth that night, spent 5 days at the Copthorne.
From New Plymouth we drove to Wellington and spent a night there, it was much cooler there but sunny and pleasant, stayed at the Copthorne there and possibly had the best view of the bay.

An upgrade is business speak for "we hired out what you booked to another customer so that his business didn't go to our competition. For getting in earlier, here have our better option that was lying around unhired".
I was looking forward to see how the Aurion is but the Ford was still pretty good. Petrol at $2.22 per litre yikes!! Although the AUD was doing very well at 1.25 NZD.
There was a lot more of NZ I would've liked to have seen at the places we stayed but our time was limited.

Come to the south island next time, its about 10x better than the north, you will not regret it...
