oiling band is the grey recessed area that goes 360deg around the outside of the lifter body. if any of that sticks out of either end of the lifter bore in the block then oil escapes and releases the oil pressure from the oil gallery in the block.

If you have a look, you will get what were on about

Basically, the grey bit in the pick Andy posted up, and the description Paul gave, you shouldt be abel to see that whilst turning the engine over by hand. Either from above (through the sideplates) or from below (looking up from the sump area)

Cheers.

Yeah cool i understand that bit but what would cause this to happen.
Would it be pushrod length when at full lift the pushrod being to short and allowing this to occur.
Cheers chris

I really doubt that the oil band is getting exposed - if it was the idle pressure would be down as well. Plus it would probably have been one of the first things the builder would have checked.

If and when you do the pressure test you wouldn't be looking for any specific amount of oil, what you'd be watching for is a noticeable increase when the pressure goes over 30 psi.

So basically remove sideplates and rocker cover and start it up and check it that way.

The height of the lobe nose is limited on the Holden six by the size of the skinny cam journals, so the oil band shouldn't really be exposed at full lift unless they were the wrong lifters altogether. Likewise at zero lift, even with a much reduced base circle it's unlikely the band would become exposed so long as they were the right lifters. And again, the OK idle pressure indicates otherwise anyway.

You could try cutting the top out of an old rocker cover or trim the top off some old sideplates so you could run it without making too much of a mess. Watch how much oil flows at say 1000 - 1500rpm and compare it to what you get at 30psi (say 3000rpms or so).
If you don't see anything obvious you may have to drop the sump off and pressure test it as described earlier.

Tiny, i gave mark at easy10s a call today, nice bloke but basically same as everyone else. Never heard of it happening and said that basically weve covered everything it could be, so the frustration continues.
Engine builder is actually going to come to my house next week and do some testing and checks with it while its in the car and running.
Guess we'll just see how that goes.
Thanks Chris.

I know this has been said but it definitely isn't a faulty bypass valve, or heaven forbid a bypass valve put in back to front?

The only way that I can think of where a bypass valve could cause this situation would be if the bypass was blocked off and the filter was unable to pass enough oil (either because it was dirty or just too small/unsuitable for the job).

The bypass valve is in the pump i guess. Id be a bit stiff for 3 pumps to have that happen.

Odd. Sorry to read about it. I am sure it's frustrating. I started building my own engines following a similar experience (and I'm a tightarse and needed more money for racing).

My suggestion is to take it out and pull it down yourself. It should only be an afternoon to get it on a stand. THEN GO THROUGH EVERYTHING YOURSELF. (yes I have trust issues!)

Yeah i'd love too but probably not confident enough to do it. If it was just a stocker i'd give it a go but whilst its under warantee i'm better off just leaving it alone.
If anything though i have learnt lots through this experience lol.
Cheers Chris.

arh not really mate just grasping at straw's, and trying to relate to other's.
i figured that with the girdle bolted down, if the caps werent all the same height and eng wasnt line honed with girdle fitted it could have distorted the block enough to open the clearances up.
im just a little weary on them as ive been told by my eng builder buddy that in certain applications they like to turn main bearings out. ie 308's.

He got fed up, lost interest and sold the car, it is the new owners problem. Chris now owns a HZ one tonner.

Yep Pete summed it up perfectly. After 2 and half years and over tipping money into it I sold it.
Honestly I am actually enjoying playing with cars again now.
I know that the new owner has tipped about 2g into the motor lately but I'm unsure on the outcome.
Did hear that car will probably be on the market again soon lol.
Cheers Chris.

Yeah I did mate. There was a few other reasons I sold it, but basically couldn't stand looking at it anymore.
It hardly moved for 3 years and is lost total interest in the end.
I actually enjoy working on something different after having the torry for so long.
It is funny fixing someone else's crappy work but it is an extremely clean car.
New paint, 308, forged bottom end, reverse cowl scoop, fully fabricated tray with tubs and comfortably fits 10s on the back, n2o etc.
Few things to sort but nothing major. And the funny thing is I actually had cash left over lol.

Sounds like you got a bargain with the new toy!

Can completely understand where you are coming from. Throw up some pictures of the tonner!
