GMH Dealer Built LJ V8 Torana's

Therefore logically you've got to wonder where gmh could have used those parts to avoid them going to waste.
What parts did the V8 Lj's share with HQ's and what parts were specific to the Lj's in this V8 option?
Ps, I'm just thinking out loud with this. But I can't see a business wasting all the parts already paid for.

Something like what Ford did with the phase 4 parts. Spread them out over whatever cars just to use them up,

Al,
From memory, Grant's sump had been cut & shut to fit LJ xmember, I remember weld lines along each side. Grant should be able to see underneath to confirm this.

The LJ Sump with the wings on it, may of only been for the Harry Firth V8 LJ's, maybe the road going V8 LJ's had a normal looking sump that is on orange v8 Dealer built car. Interesting these two HQ Engines then, maybe they are from a batch that were for the V8 LJ Road Car, there are stories of Ambulance Pack 308 Engines that were not standard 308's ???????
Al, there were no Ambulance packs until later in 1974 in HJ (like 12/74), and they were L31 M41 only if L31 optioned and thus will be HJ blocks not HQ blocks. They were just standard 308's if L31 optioned, normally they'd be 6cyl or 253. I've owned a few of them and they were simply standard engines.

Pete you memory is good . Just put it over the pit and had a good look.
To avoid the front x member a 12 cm area was cut out and re-welded before the dip stick hole.
Probably a Reeves design.

Hi Grant, it's good to see you back on this site, hope you are well, it's a couple of years since I came & saw you & your car.
You are right, we need to hear some more from Ian who started the following thread:
http://www.gmh-toran...vale/?hl=reeves
The orange car he is talking about is obviously yours. Would be good to find out where the engine/trans combos came from. He knows the guys who built the Reeves cars, so hopefully he has dug up some more info.
Did some digging on your car after I saw it, Reeves Garage was dealer 653, they received 2 x LJ 'S' 2 door 2850 4 speed cars around the time that accords datewise with your chassis number (late 72), these were PSN L217722 & L217723, am tipping that 1 of these is your car.
Let's hear some more from Ian.
Regards Pete.
Hi Grant,
Just extra to this, I have it from a reliable source that your car ALJ13843A would have been completed around the 3rd or 4th of Oct 72. According to the Vin Disc PSN L217722 was completed on 05/10/72 & PSN L217723 was completed on 10/10/72. This points to your car being PSN L217722. But this car is listed with a 6 cyl engine, something fishy there!
Pete.

Nothing Fishy there Pete
As the cars would of been sent to the Dealership as a complete 6 Cyl car from the GMH Adelaide Plant, and the Dealership would of got a New 308 V8 QT Engine in for the Swap over of the 6 Cyl.
But then the dealer (Reeves) has registered it for warranty with GMH using the original 6 cyl engine number, as I believe the engine number is only recorded by GMH once the first service sheet is returned with the engine number. Pity they didn't use the QT number.

Hi All ,
Does anyone know if these cars still have the original steering column base or has it been modified( towards driver) where it goes thru the floor.
Have they replaced the rubber knuckle with the steel one from LH/LX or does it have the extra knuckle at the rack end of the column.
Just wondering if they used cast manifolds or extractors. Matt

From memory HT-HJ are the same exhaust manifolds Al.

The GTR Prototypes used two standard LJ steering knuckles. The LH steel knuckles would be a safer item as they have no rubber to tear in the knuckle. The Dealer built ones would of used two LJ steering rubber knuckles, V8XU1Pete has seen the Orange LJ V8 Dealer Built car close up and personal, so he could say about that cars set up in the steering knuckles department. They used standard cast iron exhaust manifolds from the HQ 308 Engine i guess or the HT Holden 308 ones. AL
Almost certain that this car has two standard LJ steering knuckles with the rubber insert, LH ones wouldn't have been available when this car was built ( late 72 ). The steering column had not been moved, was still offset as per standard. Al is correct, the car has standard type cast iron manifolds.

Al, I have messaged you with some info regarding the YES308 / LJ308 car that my father owned when it first came to Victoria. I am trying to stitch together the history of that car, might have some info that is of interest to you, cheers, Glenn
