Its the same for VN to VS, but I think that some of the earlier models had it upside down (I think maybe VL? or possibly somewhere earlier in the VB-VK era where the same basic setup was used)

I think you might be right 76lxhatch, I didn't see the vehicle that it was removed from but when I measured the diff before we cut it down it was close to the length of a VL.
VB-VK still run 10 bolt diffs from memory.

The diff didn't appear to have been apart before and came as is with the leavers above the axle.

Andy the photo looks like a VN-VP commo ?

The photo of the diff was just a random photo I found on the net. Apparently it was in a VB.

The four sets of Commodore brakes I have had over the years have come from VN-VS and had the handbrake at the bottom. I usually took them off VR-VS in the hope that they would be in better condition.

I have a VH-VK Commodore manual that shows and exploded view of the brakes with the handbrake at the top. I always thought it was an error in the manual. The manual I have does not have a picture of the brakes on the car.

You make it sound like something has been lost, when its completely the opposite. Cars are built for driving, not to be museum pieces. I bet it sees a lot more use in 'destroyed' form than otherwise.

Thanks Andy, I was 99% sure thats the position they were set from factory, but then I started second guessing myself when I saw you photo.

imj411, I'm hearing ya and my son and I often wonder if we should show the original owner the car when finished, she may or may not love it.
It just made more money & sense to start out with a good body rather than start with a car that someone else had previously butchered and try to rescue it from the grave yard, I wouldn't start building my new house on a swamp if you get my drift.

I am to fussy to butcher it, we have file finished the rear geards no bog just trying to do the best job we are capable of doing. Please wait till you see the finished product then make your jugement. You can do what ever floates you boat with your car but I just hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy building well engineered street mechines.

I have to agree with Neil they should be driven and not hidden, if it was an original L34,SS or A9X I would leave it stock, but after 12 months it just got boring to drive, what would you prefer to drive on the weekend a new BMW M3 or a stock 30 year old 6cyl torana. No one in the family wanted to drive it any more and after all it was only a stock SL. So I thought it was better to give it a few moden creature comforts that the whole family will enjoy driving. My daughter carn't wait to drive it now she has her license to drive a V8.

I am on the same band wagon...I "chopped" up my car and would never look back. It's made a better car out of it to me, and having a more fun, enjoyable, usable, etc, etc, etc car is what makes it all worth while.

G'day A9X, Summit Racing have it listed on their web site as Tremec T56 Magnum. Summit have two listed for GM applications. The one I have is listed below. Or the second one with different ratios and higher ratio 5th & 6th overdrive gears. I bought a bell housing off Dellows to suit the 5lt engine and used the internal concentric hydraulic throw out bearing setup to save a bit more room and smooth operation.

Part Number:

CMG-TUET11009

Part Number:

CMG-TUET11012

Haven't had much spare time to get thing moving along, been to busy doing power steering racks.
We have to move soon new house getting close to finish, and with most of the mock up done I started to put thing back togeater to move it all into the new shed, then rip it all apart again for paint.
The front sway bar wouldn't fit under the T56 so I just bent it to shape , problem solved.

That is a tough Torana in Primer... Gonna look awesome, with bending the swaybar, did you have to adjust it much?

Thanks LX Torry Freak.
Had to bend it down 60mm. It was straight before I started.

I meant bending it down, did it pull the outside to outside dimensions in much?

Or are you saying you made it all from scratch?

I bent the ends out as well to compensate for the centre bend. The overall length is now the same as original.

Sorry for the slow response Tony. Here are a few photos of the seat bracks. it's very straight foward. The inside front mount bolts straight up to the original hole. The outside front hole was out by around 3 inches, so I drilled a new hole and inserted a flair nut with the correct tool.
The rear just needed triming of the rear mounts and I made right angle brackets to bolt them to the floor. I have retained the electrics so the drivers seat can cater for my son, daughter, the wife & me for the best seat positions.

Been a bit slack in the progress department. The new house has taken most of my time and is almost finished. The shed should be finished next week so I have started to pack her up ready for the big move over the christmas break.

Its a shame I have to pull it all apart again to paint the engine bay.
