Agree with you 100% Andy, I do not recommend anyone using plastic style aftermarket coupling unless they have standard manifolds on their V8 or an inline six cylinder. They just don't like the heat and soften easily if the heat source is close, I prefer to use the material/rubber style coupling.

After much grinding the brake calliper brackets finally fitted. Only had to take 150" tho off the disc rotors O/D.

Assembled the clutch and fitted the gearbox onto the engine and the whole assemble sat on my portable bench to wheel it under the hoist.

Love your work. A work bench on castors & a hoist. How handy. The yellow looks great.

I have been literally in the engine bay for two days trying to sort out the harnesses, heater hose & tap etc etc.. I modified an air box from a Vy commodore but when I put it in today it looked shit house. I might modify and try the original VS HSV box which is in the last photo.

I have seen a couple of 5lt efi conversions and the airbox they have used looks neat but I don't know what they were out of, and carn't seem to find any photos of them.

Please post up some photo if you have any that might fit the bill. I don't like open pod filters so would prefer to go with something that has that factory look about it.

Maybe a V6 one would be the go? Same box as a V8 (except HSVs which had the smoother version like you've got there) but the inlet is more of a 45 degree on the corner rather than straight in the side.

When I did the VK I modified an HSV box to it suited a V6, maybe something like that is an option if you want to muck around with it?

I modified a v6 airbox to fit and it looks ok, but I think the hsv ones look better (I was too cheap to buy one!).

I am struggling with this bit too. I am tossing up making a box to suit the shape and a standard air filter out of mild steel and painting it, as i can't find an airbox that fits like I want it to. I have put it in the too hard basket for now, but I can afford to because my car is far from the stage yours is.

With your skills and equipment, could you make something custom to fit and look just right? Then sell one to me... (you saw that coming I am sure... :-))

Forgot to say - which heater hoses did you end up using? I am just shortening my original donor engine ones (VN V8) but would rather ones that look neater like yours.

A few people seem to have made the stock airbox fit reasonably well. Picture from this thread.

There are a few airboxes discussed in this Autospeed Article.

Wow Andy that looks very flash. I am going to play with the HSV box that come with the engine and see how I go. There not a very big box but still might do the job.

lenny
have you thought of cutting the guts out of an orig
style battery
taking one side out
and mounting a pod filter inside
original battery tray and fake leads etc!
would go some way to the original GMH look!
just a thought!
cheers

Finally got the front brake callipers milled, redrill and plugged to suit the Torana. Back on the car bleed and tested all good now.

Thanks for the comments and photos of the air boxes guys.

I ended up fitting a HSV air box that that I had lying around for some time. It didn't take much work to get it to fit and I can adapt a cold air induction pipe up without to much mucking around. I think it fits in with the look I was trying to achieve.

Thanks Andy the link you posted recommended this air box as being one of the better ones to use. I thought it may have been a bit small but the figures show it flows better than I thought.

The HSV air box looks at home in the engine bay.

What is the length and width of the panel filter for the HSV box? Just the filter area not including the rubber seal.

The HSV box uses the same filter as the standard one, its just a lot more rounded and has a snorkel thingo out the front of the base instead of just a hole (having said that I can't see it above, maybe that's a standard bottom half?)

I will get back to you on the measurements but I think 76lxhatch is right about being the same filter. The snorkel in the base was cut off so it didn't hit the alternator and the electric fans. I will connect a cold air pipe to it from below and keep the same size inlet so I don't stuff up the flow.

I was just interested in running the usable filter dimensions through the K&N filter sizing formulas to see what CID and RPM the filter element can theoretically handle.
