Looking good! I just noticed your rear flares don't go to the bottom of the sill that you typically see on a hatch - you not too fussed about that mate?
Haha don't tell him that - mine were like that and I never noticed until someone pointed it out, from then on I couldn't stand them and had to replace them!
Arrrgh bloody hell I never noticed them
It looks like the 4 door flare that hasn't been cut. I'll have to wait and see if it starts to eat at me. Just did a quick look at few other hatch threads and noticed a couple of them have the same as mine.
I've been wondering about hatchback rear flares and which ones are "correct" for ages, then I saw this page from the GMH Parts Catalogue...

...which clearly shows the genuine flares do not extend all the way to the bottom of the sill panel.
I always assumed like many others that this style was incorrect, possibly due to being made from sedan moulds, but it seems genuine A9X flares (the only hatches to have factory-fitted rear flares were A9X) were the shorter version?
I guess in the end it comes down to personal taste, I actually don't mind the look of the shorter ones, they seem to fit with the body lines of the lower quarter panel better.

Would the flares on a race hatch be original?
Pic I have shows them going to bottom of sill.
It was a pic from 1980 and given the driver, they would have been replaced at some time no doubt.

Top ten in motivation one week back in the panel beaters the next
At the start of the build after soda blasting we found the rear hatch to be unrepairable, another hatch was found and one was made out of two.
When it came time fit the hatch, rubbers and rear spoiler the gaps and spoilers looked all out of whack.
We hoped that with a bit of adjustment it will come good, but to get the spoilers to line up it would throw out the gaps and vice versa.
It was agreed to start from scratch with another hatch, when prepping the new hatch it was found the back of the car might of had a small hit at one stage.
So this time the hatch and body were reworked to suit each other and the rear spoiler the same.
The panel shop has been great with the re-works, they could of made it hard and argued about repairs but to their credit just got stuck in.
I understand that these cars are 38 years of age and I'm happy to wait a little longer to get right.

Since the last repairs, the problem rear spoiler is still giving me grief. After 3 days of completing the paint, the spoiler lip separated from the body.
So now it waiting to go back to get fixed, this is taking some time due to not wanting to leave the car sitting around a workshop covered in bog dust.
Also there is a spread on the car in the new Forged magazine. I wasn't around for the interview, but it tuned out good advertising for S&E autos in the end.

I will keep an eye out for the magazine. Can't say I have ever seen it before though.
If I can't find it I may have to get you to send me a copy.
I really love this car!!
Are you coming across for Toranafest?

Hey Grant, It's a WA magazine probably won't see it over there. Photographer mentioned that it may be in street machine at a later date.
I'd love to go to Toranafest but not this year works hectic at the moment, maybe the next one.

After 4 Years she's home
The hatch and the spoiler all line up after a few trips back to panel shop, but it was worth the wait.
Going for a cruise tomorrow I'll get a few better shots of it.
A big shout out to Steve and the team at S&E auto's for all the hard work they have done over the years on the car.

As promised some pics from the my first cruise on the streets.
Very happy with the way acts around corners, how it sits at 60km/70km.
Just got avoid 3 point turns bit heavy on the steering.

For the record that factory diagram is wrong, they all run down & under the sill. Now before we have a bung fight you should have a look at the diagram for the air scoop, they (GMH) show a round hole in the bonnet but it is actually square (ish) on the genuine article.
So your flares are fine on this tidy hatch.

Good to see it finally hit the road.
Great pics of it's first cruise out, best part about them is you aren't afraid to get it off the black top.

ever thought about the under dash electronic power steering, my mates lj has it and it works a treat?

I don't want to hijack the thread Greg but do you have any details on what he used?
I've heard a lot of people use the Holden Barina setup...

If you want power steering the Axistr rack is the go for a LX with a Chev. It is a straight forward bolt in swap which gives you power steering and a quicker steering ratio.
I have one sitting on the the bench if you want to have a look at one.
