I recall if you chose your own combination and as long as it was [ ABC - 123 ] it was only a one off fee for fabricating the plate.

Looking at the myplates website they seem to be saying any non-random combination is at least $90 per year after the initial $220 for fab. Is this right?

The custom plates are done by the company 'MyPlates' which is why there is an annual fee.

Such a rip-off, what they expect royalties for their design?

Seriously!

Not exactly,

Myplates is a marketing agency, same company that runs the show in QLD.

Basically they went to the RTA and said "you could be capitalising on a massive opportunity to make extra money from number plates"

I also heard from a rep, that money from the plate sales no longer goes into road safety (if it ever really did)

The agency takes a certain percentage, the rest is for the rtas coffers

Let's say Joe J Blow gets his initials [JJB -123] and then sells the car, does the next owner have to pay each year?

I can't see why Ahmed H Salami should have to pay each year for Joe Blow's initials, right?

What a bunch of scabs!

If I can't get my ABC-123 combo without a yearly fee I'm not giving them my business.

I hope they go broke, we pay enough in NSW to keep our cars on the road and where's the good roads to show for it?

No, the plates need to be returned or attached to another car......so you buy a registered car in NSW, make sure THEY pay the $25 to change to normal plates before they sell the car to you so you don't have to pay to put plates on your new car......

In VIC and QLD you own the plates.........

Dunno.Stephen.Im reckon the answer is yes.

If I had to guess,I would say the RTA would send you a letter asking for them to be returned if you

purchased a car that had plates attracting a fee attached to it.

The RTA and Myplates organisations are a bunch of arse raping pirates with a

free rein to to what ever they please regarding rules, regulations, fees and charges.

Someone should blow them up.

From what i have read, if Joe Blow put personalised plates on his car and sells his car with plates to Bob then Bob will have to pay the annual fee for those plates when it comes to rego renew time. The point being that the road user never actually owns the plates pretty much they hire the content.

Its a one off fee in QLD, a lot higher though.

About $500 for a ABC-123 combo, and up to $2500 for ABCDEF.

Cheers.

However if I were to get random generated ABC-123 I pay nothing after the fabrication - it's nothing but a scam.

Hahahah yeah, you hire the personalised plates in NSW and if you sell a car you have to not only change the rego to the new owner, but if they are taking the plates too, then you need to transfer the plates separately. Otherwise, you take them back and cancel them, put them back on hold for a fee or sell/transfer them to someone else.

In VIC and QLD you own the plate and can keep it in or off a car and sell it on. For example, Howard has the LITRE8 plates and they are his wherever he goes......

If you get a random plate, even at initial rego, you'll get charged about $25+ for them.
Random general rego plates are just linked to the vehicle they are on in all states.

Last year i bought a car with plates RCE.308. When the rego renewal came there was an extra fee of $90 beside the word COLOURED (plates were white over blue slim line) on the renewal papers, therefore i believe you can purchase a car with personalised plates in NSW but to keep them on the car you have to pay the fee, which they slug you for come renewal time. I sold this particular car with the plates still attached & two weeks rego left, then they became the new owner's responsibility.

Then you have the time frame they had them,if they had them before they started charging a annual fee for personal plates , which was approx 6 years ago , does the new owner get charged annually?

I paid for a chosen ABC-123 plate about 10 years ago. The guy sold me his car for $50, I transferred the plates to my current car then sold him his car back.

I don't pay yearly fees. I can't see how they could charge the next owner as I doubt the RTA would have records that it was chosen and not random. They'd be mongrels if they did.

I wouldn't be surprised if these ar$ehole$ put up all the expired personalised plates on ebay before putting them back into the system. Capitalising on other peoples ideas.

If you haven't paid annual fees for them in the past, as long as they are still in circulation & registered to you i don't believe you have to start paying fees now. Unless you let them expire, then you will have to surrender them, re-apply for the content to be remade, then you will have to pay the re-make fee plus the annual fees to keep them. If i wish to keep a set of old plates, but for whatever reason they can't be displayed on a car (if i sell or let the rego lapse) i put them on hold at the RTA. You pay an annual fee of $50, but when you're ready to display them on a car again, you only have to exchange the existing plates for the ones you have on hold, or if you are estabilshing a new rego, ask for the car to be registered with your plates on hold. I currently have two such sets of plates on hold, one set from my LJ have been on hold for six years, so i don't think there is a time frame for how long you can keep them in storage at the RTA.

Don't you get charged the annual holding fee plus the annual fee that would be charged normally, so if you had a word custom plate you still would be paying approx $500 plus the $50 annual. It's only happens in this ripoff state

Yes if it is a personalised plate, you pay a storage fee plus the annual fee to keep the content of the plate in your name. I don't pay a fee to keep the content of my stored plates, i only pay the storage fee because they were originaly generic issued plates. For example, if your LH Torana is still registered with it's original 70's issue number plates ie HMZ.109 & the car is stripped down for a restoration when the rego is due to expire, if you wish to keep them for the car once restoration is complete, you can place them on hold at the RTA for the annual $50 fee & when you present the car for re-registration, you can take the plates off hold & legaly display them on your car again. This is of course subject to them being still legiable & not faded, excessively damaged etc. I've done this several times over the years & i've only ever paid the storage fee & once they were back on a vehicle, no annual fees were incured, only normal registration charges.

BUT you don't get the original plate back, you get a remade version.........
