To my knowledge, only if they deem the plates too faded/damaged. Every time i've taken my plates off hold, i've recieved the exact plates i originaly placed on hold back. Once or twice an RTA clerk has tried to persuade me to get them re-made but i've simply explained that the reason i put them on hold is because i want to keep those exact plates, not re-made ones. They've never declined me to date, but i suppose there is always a first time.

My HJ has been unregoed since 2004 and i still have the original plates for it here, on contacting the rta about it i cannot reuse those plates and if i want them i have to surrender the original plates and they will reissue me with the original content but on a new plate with an annual fee. Their reasoning is because the old plates are not reflective.

Doesnt matter if i declare them lost or damaged, they cannot re issue the original content unless they have the original plates in there hands.

Yes that's exactly what i was told. If you had've placed them on hold before the rego expired in 2004 & stored them you could theorecticly take them off hold tomorrow & reuse them as you would a personalised plate. Doesn't matter if they're non-reflective or not, alot of the older white over black personalised plates are non-reflective & i've seen brand new cars with 70's issue plates on them because the elderly owner has transfered them from their previous car. Evenf you had expired reflective plates from 2004, you would still have to surrender them & apply for the content to be re-made on a new plate, it's normal procedure for the RTA or RMS as they call themselves these days.

There are ways around it apparently, they can look into it case by case which i plan to do.

Personally I don't think $90 per year is worth it and after speaking to MyPlates I'm choosing not to personalise my plates, I simply won't endorse a company that is exploiting us in such a way.

ABC-123 plates were able to be personalised without a yearly fee and this scourge on society MyPlates approached the RTA with an idea to rip us off.

Shame MyPlates Shame!

If everyone did the same we could put them out of business but unfortunately I doubt many others would take my stance on the matter.

Although I hate the idea, from a business perspective, its an excellent move.

There was a company who decided to take the RTA on with registration and numberplates etc half the price of normal registration and the RTA put warnings out saying the other companies registrations etc would not be legal and blah blah blah.... dont remember what happened in the end though.

Not wanting to succumb to the rip off that is MyPlates personalised plates I asked them about having different colour random letter number plates. They tell me to get a plate in a different colour is $220, I was thinking the blue/white ones and they tell me they're coming out with new blue lettering on black and it'll cost $275. I can understand the costs with a new colour and the 25% increase in price until enough units are sold to make up for the money spent developing it.

So I told them that the car was unregistered and asked if I could get the coloured plate issued with rego so I don't have to pay for a new plate to be made up.

This was the response, in case I change my mind and want personalised in a different colour:

We would advise that you establish registration with a general issue yellow plate for $39

$39 !!!!

So to get a plate in a different colour they charge 564% extra!

These guys are rip off scum!

There's no way they're getting my business.
