It might have been replaced at some stage if it failed with a recon one
PBR used a number of ID's for these things
They are all essentially the same unit though internally
No 1 unit is better than the other

Take a pic of that same area
Looks like you have most of the number there though
VH316 is a fat Torana booster too
Its not LH
They don't fit
Information I have is VH 235 LJ GTR, VH 317 for earlier XU-1 and VH 324 Aug 73
VH 329 LH V8 VH 346 for LX V8 Hope that is correct, please let me know if anything to change?
I agree the brake boosters between LJ and LH - LX have a different bolt patterns and will not interchange.

well Mike so is VH316 the Mulder&Scully version of the LJ XU-1 Brake Boosters lol
No idea where 316 comes in.
I have the numbers I took from a Aug 1970 LC XU-1 last year it had a VH 305 model 1 on a ss plate, perhaps it has been reconditioned as that number also comes up for the HT - G ones, we best refer to the parts book I think/

AFAIK the early HK double diaphragm boosters (with the relay lever set-up) with fit the LC/LJ mounts & look just like an XU1 booster.

So was the VH316 on some LC XU-1's as well ?????? or they got it wrong lol

95mm rear rod and shallow front rod for the shallow piston master
LJ has deep piston master so different rod depth
Where I was working rebuilding boosters we just called the VH316 and asked the customer deep or shallow when building them
And not uncommon to be building 3 or 4 at once so the front shells got interchanged between boosters

Hi al.Thanks Dr terry for that, yes to look at it looks the same as a LJ XU-1 Booster, bolts up the same and worked awesome with the old XU-1 Discs and XU-1 Calipers that were on the Car, and works even better with the LX V8 Disc and Calipers i changed to awhile back. im guessing maybe a factory mistake as in the wrong brake booster been put on the car or its been replaced some time in its life with the wrong replacment booster
I've seen you mention LX V8 discs & calipers here & in another post. AFAIK there is no differences in the brake systems on 4, 6 & V8 LX Toranas other than the larger double diaphragm vacuum booster fitted to the V8. I'm excluding L34s & A9Xs of course, but in any given time period the disc rotors & brake calipers are the same on a Sunbird as they are on an SL/R 5000.

AFAIK the only boosters fitted to XU1s at the factory were the VH317 (up to 7/71) & VH324 (7/71 onwards).American Auto Parts list the rebuilt brake booster for a LC XU-1 as VH316
and the HK-HG one as VH305
these are for you to exchange your old booster for theres.

There are other numbers off early HK (relay lever type) which will fit straight in & look the same as XU1 boosters. They are VH300, 304 & 311. The only external differences are the push rod length & vacuum valve hole size.
There are also 305, 320, 329 & 330 off later HK/T/G & LH/LX V8. These look the same again but need the pedal push rod modified to fit LC/LJ.
Over the years, the various brake reconditioners have mixed & matched cases & other hardware when building boosters, so any of the above could turn up on an LC/LJ substituting for an XU1 original.

That is interesting. They must have been done in a single run. Same same the 1971 cars, as it looks like 22-1-71 was the date for them. Must have done them in prep for the Feb/Mar/Apr batch of cars.
