Nev is a bit late. Someone snuck into my yard on the weekend and stole my UC rear end and front panels. They walked right past the 5000 and hacked into the UC. They were kind enough to leave a note. It read "hey mate, I need to improve my LX and make it all nice an' stuff so I flogged ya UC bits. If you wouldnt mind removing ya dash and handbrake assembly for me and leaving it on ya letterbox that would be great". Cheeky bugger I reckon but hey, the bloke has taste so I can forgive him.

It is a shame Leakey never got a start on HDTUC but I think there is dude over west looking at doing something similar. One day maybe if I can bring myself to buy hatch I wouldnt mind having a crack at the HDT version, but that will be many days away. I have enough trouble making my bed, let alone a car !!

Anyway, back to the Monza............

its a shame that holden didnt follow through with the monza in the eighties, all they had to offer was run outs of monaro, UC torana & gemini's.The early monza with the steel bars could of adopted the VC/VH cosmetic's fairly easy while the laster GSE types could of adopted the VK/VL (walky) cosmetics. Looking through articles on the brock monza, the bigest modification HDT did was swap the K/Frame, its all GM & should be staright forward. the monza with the aussie V8 & the independant rear suspension would of helped holdens effort in Group A racing & would of gave ford an excuse to devellop a 2 door like the 85/6? mustang (perkins/johnson) here in aus. my 2 cents, not that it means much as i would of been more interested in voltron & ninja turtles at the time. LOL

Well there's been a little bit more done since I posted last.

Getting it ready for masking and priming.

Posted Image

At this stage I just want to get the metal sealed up, so for now the windscreen can stay in place. I use electrical wire to lift the edge of the rubber so I can get some paint under it. It also makes masking the rubber easier. We were forecast a lot of rain so I was pushing to get it sealed up before the rain came.

Posted Image

I found a little bit of rust in the fuel filler, but that doesn't matter, the filler is going anyway : )

Posted Image

Posted Image

I also masked up the sun roof seal. Again I was racing the clock to beat the rain. I can remove the sunroof later and wire wheel the inner edges then.

Posted Image

Posted Image

This part looks especially nice now hahaha.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

With that finally done it was time to attack the VH front panels.

Posted Image

The front guards came up well with only a few tiny rust holes in one guard.

Posted Image

Looking better already!

Posted Image

Posted Image

The bonnet has quite a lot of surface rust under the paint.

Posted Image

With all the paint removed and the first coat of converter on, I could see it will need more coats. Then luckily for me we had nearly 300mm of rain in two days so the fight began to get the surface rust neutralised.

Posted Image

It's getting better.

Posted Image

Still a bit brown though.

Posted Image

One more coat should do it.

Posted Image

Finally the dots are black. Job done : )

Posted Image

The front guards were also affected by the rain and needed more converter.

Posted Image

They came up well after sanding the second coat of converter and applying the third coat.

Posted Image

I also stripped the front apron.

Posted Image

With all the converter sanded again it was finally time for primer.

Posted Image

There's a few wobbles in the bonnet, but no rust.

Posted Image

Posted Image

These are the rust holes in one of the front guards. Massive aren't they? : )

Posted Image

So that's where it is for now.

Will you pop those bumps from the bonnet or just hi-fill?

Those dings in the bonnet will pop out easily enough and should only require a small amount of shrinking. I don't worry about dings and what not at this stage. I was just trying to get everything sealed up. Plus by doing everything in stages it makes it all seem a lot less daunting : )

Well today I got to cut a couple of bits off.

I also noticed there is a nice bend in the lower radiator support : )

Posted Image

Anyway, I needed to cut something off so I started with the stone tray. It's stuffed and different to a commodore one anyway so bye bye : ) I also cut the "ears" off the sides of the radiator support to make room for the bigger VH indicators.

Posted Image

Posted Image

I cleaned up where the old stone tray mounted to the car but by looking at it and the commodore piece I assumed there would be some alignment issues, meaning I'll have to change the shape of where it mounts.

Posted Image

Looks better already.

Posted Image

But I was right about how the two pieces line up. I've been supplied a VH front cut so I'll have a look and see if I should just use the whole radiator support area or just modify what's already here. Either way it'll be fine.

Posted Image

Posted Image

I'll have to modify the plenum, or just replace it with a commodore one, so it lines up with the bonnet.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

I love photo apps on my phone : )

Posted Image

I had to sit the front bar in place to get an idea of how it fitted.

There's absolutely zero mounts on the front bar so a jack and stands will do for now : )

Posted Image

Posted Image

The tar on the floor in the rear wasn't too hard to remove luckily.

Posted Image

Posted Image

But inside the cabin is a different story. This took 40 minutes to get off. It's not even a square foot, and the whole floor is covered. I need to buy a heat gun!

That's it for now,

Apparently Dry Ice is the go for removing that tar and crap Tim. Let it freeze it and you can lift the whole thing off in big sheets. Less mess as well, with no residue.

Looking good Tim.

This is one project I'd like to see finished. How close will it be to a group C car? What wheels are you using?

OK that's interesting advice regarding the dry ice. I've never tried it. Where would I get some? I'm keen to give it a go : )

any of the gas suppliers like BOC can supply it :)

It makes light work of the stuff!

the only other way is to oxy/heat gun it... but thats VERY messy, makes it tacky and nasty.

Dry ice makes it shatter off in big sheets.

If you can, buy the pellet stuff rather than a big block, means you can spread it over the whole floor and let it work its magic
