Being semi serious for a second, as a expert at not being able to weld, the original joints that hold the car together are spot welds, which to me don't look all that strong especially after a bit of rust gets into the seam and pushes tears them apart, so surely a butt weld like this would be stronger then that?
On a tangent story I recall that when Holden first looked at the Opel to be the basis for the Commodore, the imported Opel's fell apart on Australian roads and Holden had to add bracing and strengthen the shells to meet Australian conditions, which might explain the extra bracing that the Commodore had that the Monza didn't. Actually another little tip bit I remember from the time was Holden disguised the Opel with Torana panel work.
Anyway enough ramblings, before DJ starts complaining about my stories again and more progress reports please maestro.

OK, so here's where I stand. When it comes to chassis work I'm more into the hot rod side of things rather than monocoque bodied cars, so I'm just doing what I spoke to my inspector about. The rails are getting inner and outer diamond fish plates, that's a given, so I dont actually refer to that as "bracing". Also, it's not a straight line all the way through even though the pics make it look that way. I followed the shape of the inner strut reinforcing, so by welding the join inside and out I've actually fully seam welded the strut bracing into the joint. This is what I was told to do, and honestly by adding that much more metal into the join made the welding a lot easier.
Also, because this bay is getting fully smoothed out the cavities at the top of the rails are getting pieces of 1.6mm zinc fully welded along the top. This is considered a fish plate also according to the inspector, even though the main purpose is cosmetic.
As for a can of worms, I'm all for it. It's the best way for people (me included, I'm no one special who knows everything!) to learn about these situations.
In regards to the staggered join, all the hot rod chassis I've worked on through TAC inspection that needed joining were done at a 45 degree angle and reversed on each side if possible, so what Terra is saying I completely agree with. But for this I just did exactly what I was told as TAC and Qld Transport rules are very different. It's sad, but that's just how it is.
I'm never going to stop any one posting their views or opinions in my threads, I don't care if people think I'm a dickhead. To be honest, I kind of am hahaha! I certainly don't know all there is to know so please anyone with more info about things than what appear to be shown please add it!!! We're all here to learn!
Also, Monza1 thanks for the heads up. I haven't looked at the steering column join up situation yet but I do appreciate now knowing to use some of the commodore firewall, or modify the monza one.
So there it is. I'm happy with all the comments, especially cruiza pointing out my rivet and bog technique : )
One more thing, don't fight over yourselves if someone posts a harsh comment. It's the internet. All we want is to learn some stuff and look at boobs : )

There's so many cluey people on this forum and the more they speak out, like terra did, the better off we'll all be.
As for boobs there's none here yet but maybe I can build some :-)
As far as playing the guitar is concerned I haven't done that for a few weeks but last night I did go to the last g3 concert in brisbane to see joe satriani, steve vai and steve lukether. It was freaking awesome!

Well I finally chopped the front stone tray off as the rotten thing kept cutting my shins!
I don't need these 3 holes any more as the steering box isn't going back in.
First fish plate. It's just 3mm zinc.
Next job was to clean up the chassis rails. The usual thing people do is just weld a piece over the top, but that doesn't clean up the ugly seam on the inner guard that runs along the chassis. Also, the side of the rail is pretty ugly. I'm going to cover all of this.
Also, the rail has a kink upwards near the firewall. I don't want that, so I've markled a straight line along the top of the rail and will trim the lip off the rear of the rail so I can make the rails look dead straight.
Here's the rear part of the lip removed and welded.
I folded these out of 1.6mm zinc. I've made a 60mm lip that goes up at a 45 degree angle to hide the seam on the top of the rail on the inner guard and the lower 100mm lip covers the ugly rail side.
The black line is where the new piece goes so it's hiding a lot of ugly crap. I also bought a can of weld through primer today so I used it inside the rails today. Seems really good. I've never used it before. I also welded another piece of 3mm zinc over the top join in the chassis before I welded the new chassis skin on. Can't hurt : ) It's not done in this pic though.
Weldy time.
I had some nice smoke coming from in here while welding. Very tasty : )
Passengers side fish plate and steering holes welded up.
I still have to finish the front of the new rail skin and smooth the inner guards but it's already an improvement in my opinion.
There's over 3 metres of welding just in the two rail covers. Good fun : )
So there you go : )
