According to the late LC parts catalogue - the 161S and 173S had the same muffler.

Brad suggested the reason for the LJ system was due to the change in the gearbox (from Opel to M20) which meant the cross member at the back of the gearbox was 3 inches further Bach with the M20 (thus a different bend to the LJ exhaust)

FWIW, I have one of his early LC XU1 repro mufflers on my car now, and am very happy with it. Fits up beautifully, and sounds great.
