Whats a recommended brand/type of gasket goo to use on Holden 308, for things like inlet manifold, timing case, water pump, oil pump, sump?

You sound excited!!! Hahahaha, thanks!

Any particular type? It would be used in conjunction with a gasket.

Judging by the website, I would assume the yellow one?

Brad, I've used genuine Holden Sealing Compound (3835215) for years- never let me down.
Available in 250ml tins from Holden.

Interesting, Ill give my local stealership a call on Monday to see if they stock it.

Otherwise I was thinking perhaps Permatex # 2?

1207C is my preferred goo.....Expensive but awesome.

I never use RTV in conjunction with a gasket, only in place of it.

For cork gaskets i just use a bit of contact adhesive, and for paper gaskets i use either Loctite #3 or #4 gasket adhesive, depending on the position.

Cheers.

Remember that less is often better , I don't put anything on waterpump timing case or oil pump gaskets usually . I may put a small amount around areas where coolant flows but if you use any more than required you could end up with a silicone worm blocking an oil pick up or radiator core. Also I do not use silicone on rubber or cork.

These "which sealant?" threads always end up with a heap of different people very strongly recommending a heap of different products. The truth is that with reasonably good practices and modern products you'd actually have to try pretty hard to build a leaker.
A couple of comments: the very early RTVs (like the original Silastics) had very poor oil and fuel resistance and didn't last well on sump or manifold gaskets. Those days are long gone but still people avoid them for this reason even though the OEMs have been using them for a decade or more. There are specialty sealants made for anything you can think of (and some people will use 4 or 5 different ones on a single engine) but really you can assemble something like a Holden engine using nothing more than Loctite Black Maxx or Wurth 250 or any of the million equivalents. You can use it on anything; paper, rubber, cork (cork usually weeps a bit without sealant). It works with or without a gasket, but if you want something a bit stiffer for gasketless joints the grey stuff is the go. But really if you have a tube of black and some thread sealant you can do the entire engine.

I'm up in the sticks. Townsville would be the nearest, 380odd clicks? The one in Cairns is closed down.

Would the Permatex # 3 do the job? I got a full bottle of that!!

Loctite 567 pipe sealant is as good as anything else on head bolt threads, and you can get it anywhere.

Go with the holden sealer for head bolts for sure; for silicon /silastic type sealer- try the local toyota dealer; I think p/no. is 08826-00080a,or 00090a.Ones red, ones black-black one is awesome on oil and water joints.Red is for transmission and diff applications. Both work VERY well. They might even be Threebond gear, manufactured for Toyota.

I tend to just use the red permatex silicon on everything.... exhausts, oil pumps, water pumps, thermostats etc etc.

never had any problems, stays rubbery, great with heat and oil..

Cheers mate. We have a Repco store up this way, but it may be more $$$ then Holden quoted? Plus freight costs. I think I'll take a chance with the Loctite stuff! Cheers.
