Yup. That GTR badge was enough to send the insurance premium skyrocketing ... and the premium even more horrendous if you also had finance on the car.My first Torana 6 would be quite rare these days. It was a late 1973 LJ Torana "S" 2-door finished in Salamanca Red with black trim.
It sported a 202, 4-speed and was factory fited with a GTR dash.
I have heard stories that back in the day it cost more to insure GTR's so this may be why this car was bullt to these specs, the only differences would have been black outs and GTR badges.
I sold the car to a Soss's brother in law who re painted the car white and moved it on.
It may still exist today, SA Rego RRD 730.....????
When I was looking at buying a new LJ XU-1, I discovered that I could just afford the car, but on my pay at the time, there was no way I could afford the insurance. The smaller Holden dealership had experienced this problem before and was putting together XU-1 look alikes with a stock 202 and standard driveline for customers in similar circumstances. I said no thanks, but if you could order me a Torana S with XU-1 engine, gearbox, suspension, and brakes, then I'd be interested. In the end, I bought a used LC 4 door 2600/4speed that I could afford to own, drive, and insure.

I seem to remember Ford re-badging the Capri GT 1600 as the XL, because insurance premiums were killing the sales of an otherwise fairly mundane car. An HG 308 Kingswood was cheaper to insure than a 186S GTS Monaro.
One of the quickest cars in those days was a TC Cortina 250 4-sp. These things had a Falcon 250 ci 6-cyl with no anti-pollution gear & a 4-sp Toploader gearbox. They wouldn't stop or go around corners & fell to bits fairly quickly, but would blow away any Holden 6 except the GTR XU-1 & even then it was close. But you guessed it, group 1 insurance premiums !!!

A few years ago my old man had a 62 R Series Valiant 225 push button auto. Only 1008 brought into the country. Come time to sell it, no one was interested in it... He lost half what he paid for it, and some hippy girl bought it cause it looked groovy. Think she drove it to Tasmania to go n hug some trees or something....

The rarest cars I have had and still own is a 1930 Buick 60 series master 6 Phaeton. One of 811 made, one of only 3 that came to Australia.
had a few other cars, the A9X, my SS hatch with factory air, my VT Senator 220i with six speed manual believe only 30 were made in this configuration.
Red
I do not know alot about Buicks, but what I can say is that there is what I believe to be a 1929 model that participates in the SA Variety Bash that requires a lot less attention from the mobile mechanics than the "modern cars" comprising of Holden HR's and the like...

Id say Id be hard pressed to get any details. Ive been seeing it run around up here every now and then for the past 15 years or so with the same old couple driving.
Did some sleuthing, it's a red CDT sedan, lives cairns or townsville way, is a one owner car! If u can actually get some contact details for the owners i'll make it worth your while

I spose this is rare, my 57 I imported from the states, 12 bolt ladder bar rear end, 454 BBC, T350 (cant remember who made it - brand) 15 inch rims 165 front & 305 M/T rear, sold it and bought the hatch.
Not sure that was a step forward! I would swap my hatch for that Chevy in a heartbeat...

my current project is the most unusual/ rarest ive owned
A Morris J2 van... this one had been cut into a ute by the previous owner ( farmer used it to put big round hay bales in on the farm). going to leave it as a half covered ute style thing to haul bikes in. Will get a big canvas top to cover the rear.
It is getting a commodore L67 and auto, hilux diff and disc brakes on front.

I currently own one of these factory built gtr spec "S" models.
JL dual cast block, gtr cast number head, m20, 3:08 lsd, gtr dash, steering wheel, front sway bar and 5.5"rims with dress rims gtr centre caps and wheel nuts. It also has only one spare wheel bracket in the boot as per gtr's due to the factory fitted wider rims.
Mine was apparently ordered like this to avoid high insurance costs as well.
I've been working my way through the vin disc and there were none of these built in 72, by the end of march 73 I've found 6 2 doors with 202's, m20 and lsd diffs. Many other 2 doors were built with 202's and m20 but not with the lsd. Until now I have only heard of one other owner of one these, so now I'm up to atleast 9 of these specials. I don't know if the ones on the vin disc had all the other bits apart from the driveline.
Cheers James.

A few years ago I bought a 1973 LJ 4door, 202 with M20 and 3.08 LSD. It had a GTR dash and the 5.5 inch steel wheels with GTR caps. I sometimes wondered if it was a special order or a limited run.
