As you know chrome bumpers are hard to get a hold of and rechroming a costly exercise. I have a pair of fibreglass bumpers that I would consider chroming based on some feedback on chrome spraying. Has anyone looked into chrome spraying similar to link http://www.youtube.c...h?v=HYiQILsC1fQ

Is there anyone in Perth that is using the 3 parts system chrome spray.

It works well and you can't tell its not real. The only issue is getting the tough stuff here in Australia and having someone to apply it. Be using it on carbon fibre bumpers.

Spectra Chrome is the gear from the States. I started a topic on this a little while ago, as a mate of mine is starting this up in Adelaide

I've been looking at bring some in but the issue I am having for bumpers is durability. Few more USA enquiries yet. What did your buddy say about the durability of Spectra Chrome? Lots of variations and suppliers but not all suitable for bumper exposure/abuse. Like a good 2pac tough will work. Got to have chrome bumpers on a hatch.

Quite detailed feedback here about it.

Its really just getting the durability and UV protection in the clear coat. Prep and application is extra fussy and getting someone who knows all the pitfalls. Might be left with using the heavy chrome bumpers as I don't want to ruin the look I am after. Waiting emails from a few other US sources first before I bin the idea.

there is a lot of talk about how, and what and who. My question was does anyone do it in Perth?

www.alsacorp.com these guys pretty much invented the stuff and have been doing it now for about 5-7 years. You used to be able to buy the stuff from a few different suppliers over in the east coast, so surly there would be a distributor in the west.
On the website you'll notice there are a few different types of Chrome paint that they do. there first chrome paint they brought out it was nearly a 2 week process from start to finish because of drying & solvent evap times.

I havn't used the chrome just the crystal FX and candies but Shoot them an email they are pretty helpful and there is heaps of info about applying it for your painter as well.

Until you get the right chroming system product its pointless naming a Perth spray painter.

Otherwise if you choose the wrong product it starts like this.

Posted Image

Then the UV destroys most of these systems/products.

So your nice shiny fibreglass bumpers look like this after a month of sun.

Posted Image

Then you also need to find a product that doest mark or scratch over easily from general use. Many systems are fine for indoor and interior bits but not full direct sunlight and road borne grit, bugs, washing, detergents etc. Its all to do with the clear and the protection and reaction to the base chrome coat. If only life was simple. For me its finding the right product .... then I can find out if someone local can do it/and or has the right equipment that the chosen product needs to apply it.

Believe me I am working on it and have been for months. When I find the answer I will share. If I can't the carbon fibre bumpers will be sold and the heavy metal chrome ones be back on. I am not a painted bumper fan on a Torana. Patience little grasshopper help is on its way ... LOL

For memory Alsa recons not to clear for 48 hrs have you tried that? and I think they use a quick cure clear over the chrome

Tried nothing yet because with the help of google and dozens of emails I simply haven't found either the right product or method of application. Having no interest or talent in paint, I am not interested in being the importing guinea pig with gallons of multiple branded .... but totally useless product. (and just as useless application instructions) LOL

Once I can find dozens of people that have used and verified a system (and its application) the wallet will come out and the bumpers will be chrome. I am not going to tip money down the drain on just a few good reports ..... it has to be significantly reported as being successful for bumper use. But I will pay very well for a quality chrome paint that has all of the durability and uv resistance as any of the better automotive 2pac paint finishes. As I said I will send the bumpers to the USA if it can't be done in australia.

Awaiting Usa feedback on Alsa solutions/products that are suitable for bumper use.

The even more amazing thing with all this chrome paint talk is that it can be applied on nearly anything!...Sand Cast Statues, Wood, Rubber, Your Cat and even ya Grandma. It really is pretty amazing stuff, but the biggest question is all about its durability or lack of. Getting the right answers with solid proof of its virtues is the hardest thing to try and find. My mates narrowed down his chosen brand, and is even planning a trip to the States to visit the mob that manufactures these systems and do a workshop run by the manufacturer, so he can see hear and be educated in How, Why and What this can be applied to with the best possible finish thats gauranteed to last in most conditions.

I know basics but all that chemical reaction and application methods are just way over my head. Seems the answer is just finding the guys that have found the right combo.

Also with real chrome being so expensive and environmentally sensitive, the market for a durable paint could be quite large. But obviously that answer is not widely known.

Still much of it could be good for indoor/interior needs.

There is another painter I know onthe sunshine coast that runs another resto shop that has had great success with Alsa's mirror chrome which is aplied way different to the ones above to the point where other shops get him to do their work for them.
Fortunatly He hasn't had the durability problem that you've had but he 2k clears it, the mob that use to sell Alsa corp's stuff was Colourmakers in Brisbane. And @ $245usd per litre it's no where near as dear a harliqin.

So a Quick Google search turned this up turns out you WA guys have a retailer already so you don't need to inport it:

You have the sunshine guys number? Pretty sure the old v8 superboring vodafone cars used mirra chrome in their paintwork but if I remember they had issues with it and cost vodafone lots on fix-ups.

Read quite a bit on people who have used mirra chrome but nothing good on exposed parts. Still someone might have the magic key?

Have not finished the research but spoke to Alsa in the states. Mirra Chrome is not the product for my bumper purpose, but ChromeFX might be. As the system requires special equipment, so its not common. After calls and 100's of questions to the distributors, sales reps, users lead me to Gas 78 Industries in Malaga. The guy there (dave) said they are getting this system in the next few months. Still no easy answer but they seem keen to find the right system and application method to copy real chrome straight from a spray gun and with the durability of the best automotive 2 pac paint.

Have just got some feedback from a contact I have been chasing. see below

Sent
Hey mate just saw your add on YouTube and was wondering if you can chrome spray a pair of fibreglass LH torana bumpers. If so what sort of preparation is required for you to spray, as I will have to remove the paint currently on them

Responce
soryr for late reply we were moving into a big shop and nearly set up if you can send me the measurnment and yeah dont worry we have to put it through a process and we will clean it up the cost on chroming is not really in the labour its in the matrial used to do the chroming for its is actuall silver and little expensive as bloody hell everything went from transport to import tax so i need to know the dimention of the thing to give you a quote but minimum order start at 750 for that is the least amount of chemicals like the bare minimum to run the machine.

and its not worth it for us or you as a customer so if sometimes you need less or more we try to put 2 or three orders together to try to cut cost for customers but please send me dimention so i can give a proper quote but its is expensive but the most desired FX on the market as well i can colour chrome it for you to blue

i have attached som pics for you

If the quality of work is as bad as the punctuation....I'd be running the other way...Just my 2 cents worth
