frOck ay, small world haha.

I used to be mates with Eric from working with him. I haven't heard from him in a long time, possibly because he owes me $400 for another Torana he bought off me after he sold the hatch.

Did you bare metal it? If so, what was the body like? I'm keen to see it in it's current form. Was a quick car.

Good to know it's being looked after, I just need to find out what happened to my old LJ now :P

The 1979 race record setting 05 Hatch. I had heard a few very early whispers that due to financial stress Brock might part with the only racecar he had been unwilling to part with. I met Brock at the Wannaroo round and discussed it, he gave me his managers number to ring on Monday to discuss the purchase. I had a very sleepless night (over excited) as I awaited Monday, I had the cash in the bank, I had the ultimate desire and arranged to inspect the car. Then came the pressure from my family, friends and ex wife saying WTF your nuts why are you wasting money on an old racecar your not going to race or drive. I still have bruises and self harm injuries from being swayed into not doing the deal and proving that I was truly the biggest fool in history. You have to remember however that at the time nobody believed these cars would be selling for anything like what we have seen in the past 15yrs or so.

Before it ended up with Bowden my understanding was that once I pulled out it was sold to a guy in Melbourne who then sold it to Bowden's. I also heard latter (although not confirmed - myth?) that Brock had used it as collateral for payment of some of his debt but had retained the right to buy the car back? However I was never privy to any proof of that scenario, and possibly it could have just been pub like BS. Red might have clarity on how it played out and the reality.

I just remembered when I was 18 (in 1983) and had just started working, the local car yard had a hatch. It was definitely an A9X and they said it was a back up HDT car or some thing along those lines (probably utter BS). When he flipped the fuel filler licence plate down it had old red and black paint that was supposedly the proof. I knew enough back then to know it was an A9X and I badly wanted to buy it - I think it was $13k - but the parents wouldn't go guarantor for a loan :)

Around the early 80's the Vic park 2nd hand car yards where full of Torana's. The two I remember most where Warren Mead and Independent Motors. Any one week you could have 20-30 in a variety of specs and conditions from A9X-L34-SLR-SS etc. Imagine if someone threw that many Torana's on a car lot today. There where also Monaro's and those fugly Fraud things.

A good mate of mine who was a high profile Sprintcar driver was racing at Warnambool back in the very late Group C era, He was offered a Brock car for approx $20k. At the time his sprintcar was worth more !! He currently is a purveyor of fine used cars to the public and has owned many Torana,s since the one he let go. He owned the hatch from the Biante collection prior to their ownership. The most significant car I personally passed on is the Wayne Negus GMP/A hatch, $24k and knew the cars pedigree and history. At least I get to see the car regularly in my mates shed !!!!!

Funny you guys mentioned independent motors, first car i got from them was a 1982 z28 camaro in mint condition, then about 8 years later i got a 1988 VL HSV Walkinshaw No 138. after about 2 weeks of owning this car the gearbox s@#t itself so it was of the road for a couple of months and 5 grand later, when i got it back i didnt want anything else to happen to it as i was only 26 and it was only a mater of time before i killed myself in it so i took it to Mandurah from Kalgoolie to be parked at my parents. on the trip down the motor dropped a valve and that was the end of that. 6 months later and around 10 grand this car was off its head. about 2 years later i sold it for 28 grand with 58000 kays on the clock, That is my biggest regret, not because of the money they eventually brought in but for the car it was..... :banghead:

Back in the late 80s there was a falcon XA coupe in purple, the car was mint and really looked good, but I would have had to sell my hatch to buy it for $13,000 closer investigation revealed the car was originally built for a Ford excu and had all the luxury gear plus was all but a Phase 4 in running gear and suspension yep it was a RPO special order job.

But I KNEW there was no such thing as a Phase 4 and saw that it was the owner telling bullshit and wisely didn't touch it

I will be kicking myself for that one till the day I die

The Brock 1979 hatch was still owned by Brock up until 1993. Brock had some serious problems with the tax man and the car went to auction and passed in for $33000.A bloke by the name of Milton Seferis boought it from Brock and owned it till 1999 when Brock drove it at Phiilip Island historics meeting when it was then handed over to the Bowden family.

In mid 1986 my parents took me to the Gold Coast for some rehab after I had a long stay in hospital. One day we went to Gilltraps Motor Museum and there it was..... the Moffat XA Falcon GTHO Phase 4, for sale with a 30K asking price. I suggested to my father that he should lend me the money for it and I would pay him back in a short while. Being the astute successful business owner that he was he knew no old Falcon was worth anywhere near that. So I missed out and I still grit my teeth every time I see a photo of that car.

I remember Independents, apparently every so often the coppers used to go into that yard and slap on yellow stickers, they did have some performance cars in there ,Corvettes,Trans Ams and Aussie muscle.

We used to harrass the guys at Independent motors when we were at Carlise Tafe for our 2 week block. Run down there & take all the used 351 ex cop cars for "test drives". Would only get a couple in before they realised we were just flogging their cars!
Ahh, the good old days...

Used to be a great way to spend Saturday morning, test driving cars. Independent Motors site is now going to be developed, car yard closed a while ago. Just about every brand / model of Australian built musclecar was sold from this yard, along with many other makes. Who remembers going to local footy or drive in and all you had was wall to wall musclecars? AAAh !!!! :driving: the 70s and 80s what a time to be a young lad with a license.

my valencia orange a9x hatch was bought from independent motors
in 1980 by the guy i bought it off.
he traded a 4.2 sl hatch on it
and gave pictures of it in the yard years later
it had 8 n 10 inch widened gts rims on it at the time
one of the first in w.a. so i was told
they also had the only persian sands a9x hatch
and that ended up in mandurah
ironic
thats where i find myself living
cheers davemc

No wonder I bloody drink.
Besides marriage what a costly mistake. Even today after so many years of regret .... it still hurts.
As the auction result shows nobody thought these things where worth buying. Everyone said why do you want an old race car, I remember thinking why dont people see what I see (collect history).
Just to rub more salt in, do we know what Seferis and Bowden paid.
