I guess it could be leaking through where the timing case mates up to the block? Was all the old gasket removed from the timing case and block? Or perhaps the timing case has a pin hole in it due to corrosion?

That's a possibility. I will do the compression and pressure tests and if they are all good then I will start to pull it apart and check

Bit of a shit to pull the timing case off with the motor in... Kinda need to take the sump off to refit it all 100%.

I did have the front cover off to adjust the timing chain so maybe it didn't seal properly when I put it back on, wouldn't have thought it would get into the oil from there though

Sounds like a Head gasket to me, probably not torqued properly, or it's split.

I think you know what the problem is.
Is is an easy job, but you have to take your time and not cut corners like removing the front seal first, leaving the front seal on and trying to force in place to get the bolts in would be one thing that can cause grief..

I know the front cover is the problem with it leaking out but I would have thought that's how the water was getting into the oil, anyway investigations start today

From memory all bolts bar three on the inlet manifold side.

Thanks for All the replies, just had the heads tested and they came back all ok. So at this stage I'm working on the assumption that it must have been a bolt that didn't seal or a gasket. See how it goes when I re assemble it later in the week

Also my 253 has been bored to 30 thou and it has L34 heads, the rest is standard. I know it is no longer 253 but Can anyone tell me what size it would be now?

257 cubic inch.
The big valves might knock some torque out of it.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I have the motor running now and no signs of water, looks like it was just the bolts not sealing

Well I thought he had sealed all his bolts? I didn't seal the ones for the timing case/water pump.

Yeah I put permatex on the head bolts the first time, wich I was told would be fine, this time I used proper gm sealant and that seems to have solved the problem
