lord of the rings jackson ?

thats the one, if you are ever in NZ go to Blenheim and the Omaka heritage museum it is a world class exhibit of genuine world war one aircraft and artefacts some aircraft are original some restored and some replicas
for doing the dambusters movie he wanted a real Lancaster but with there only being two flying in the world and none that are likely to be released to be restored to flying condition he was out of luck.

thanks for the reply John, but I still can't find anything on any aircraft recovered and being restored to flying condition, at least not a Lancaster, I don't have any artefacts myself, the B24 I have visited a few times but that is a war grave 8 men died there and I am not about to take even a scrap of metal from it. I was offered some mosquito parts but thought how cool but realisticly what would I do with them, I am happy with my photos and the time I sat in a Spitfire last year and in a Lancaster 10 years ago will always be moments that have meaning to me a huge thrill mixed with great sadness that too many good young men died in or from these great machines that were designed to deal out death. I have been for a joy ride in a Dakota DC3 warbird but that was different

John if you find anything or know of anything about this rescued Lancaster I would be very interested to seeing it please let me know where I can find info on it

thanks cruiza

I watched a doc today about the dambusters and the commentator was like a school boy at first as he sat at the controls of a Lancaster and then cried as he thought about those who lost their lives, I totally understood his emotions

Hi Michael,

The doco was on the abc late 1993 about the lancaster bomber, was made by the bbc.I have never ever been in a plane in the air,iv'e just sat in them on the ground at air shows, but one day i'd like to go for a ride in a DC-3,they are a cool looking plane, with a unique sound of the engines.Thats the doco i saw about the dam busters, and after that doco was the dam busters movie, haven't seen it in 32 years ago,i watched with my grandfather when he was a alive..
That doco i watched in 1993,i wounder were that is now finding that lancaster bomber in the sea.

Cheers John.

I watched Monster Moves not long ago and they had a plane special. There was one about a lost squadron from WW2 that was in a ice tomb in Greenland. They found where the were, melted a tunnel down (over 250 foot) to one of the planes and stripped and raised all the pieces. They then restored it to flying condition. It was a great story.

They did find them ,apparently miles from where they should have been and not too far from each other ,some of the canopies were slid back indicating some may have bailed or survived the impact, they all ran out of fuel.

Yeah, I'm sure there is not too much needs to be done to "G for"...........it was in flying condition when they sent it to the AWM wasn't it?
And "D fer" is even more complete.......they even have all the "options" available......

i heard Australia made some planes in the 2nd world war,the Wirraway, the Boomerang and the Kangaroo, the Kangaroo was apparently faster than the Spitfire, only downside was it took about 3 miles to turn the thing.

Can't say i've herad of the 'roo.

Wirraway was an excellent trainer, the Boomerang was a brilliant piece of kit in its day.

Thanks for the Lancaster clip.
My Dad flew a tour and half with a British Squadron, never spoke about it much but did say a book titled, "Battle Order 204" was the closest he had read of the experience. Dad was also in the same Squadron as Don Charlworth who wrote "No Moon tonight" another good read on aircrew experience.
I have attached a pic of a model that Dad put together during his tour. These models were sold on the base in kit form. You got some wood in the basic shape and had to whittle it down. Decals, paint, props and landing gear was supplied. Its a little worse for wear after nealy 70 years but great to have.

Would it be rude to suggest that the AWM look after that for you Norm?
I doubt there are more than a handful left..........

I recently spoke to the local Model club and the guy was more excited than me.
As a result I am going to get it framed with his medals and photo so its kept as is and not get any more bits lost or damaged.

Do you know much about his service?
I assume that paint job is his aircraft which puts him in 103 Sqn.

I have Dads Log book and some other stuff, have applied for his Service Record.
He was a F/Sgt Wireless Operator/Mid Gunner. Flew Operational out of Elsham Wolds with 103 Squadron. Flew 156 Operational Hours in Lancasters and the whole crew survived 42 Missions, mostly nighttime, the longest being 8hours to Leipsig. He returned to Australia in Jan 1945 as a Warrent Officer and assigned to the Ballarat Wireless School as a trainer. Strange that I have ended up in Ballarat.

Cheers for sharing Norm, and yes do look after the model
At work we have a number of in jokes of things that get heard over the radio, one I like was a pilot had landed at Berlin airport where the air traffic controllers were noted for their short patients, the pilot was slow to follow instructions on where to taxi and the Air traffic controller said in English with that great German accent and with a hint of condescending impatients asked of the pilot
"have you not been to Berlin before?"
and in the oh so polite fine English accent came the reply
"Yes, but it was at night and I didn't land."

on a similar vane, a Air German Air Traffic controller was correcting a German pilot for speaking in German on the radio, English is the International language used in Air Traffic Control, and the German pilot complained
"I am a German pilot in German built plane flying out of a German airport why must I speak English?"
and before the air traffic controller could reply over the radio came a fine high society English accent
"because you lost the war old boy"

In the same vain as the OP, there is a massive contingent of military bunker hunters in Europe that spend years tracing leads and exploring disused army facilities.

this story was a great read-
http://gardenbunker.blogspot.com.au/

Plus heaps of others on random forums.

makes me wish we had stuff like that in aus.
