you are doing great work there mate keep it up, that heat you are working in is real fuked up,,, mate is you buy your self a recess air crinkler tool it will stop this buttweld that you are doing and they have a hole punch for the plug welds on the ops side of the air tool, a tad more work mate but makes the job a lot more better and easyier

cheers gong

I have seen these tools.. i always was lead to belive that "butt" welds are stronger and wont corrode as a "lap" join will?

How do you hide a Lap join???? I know there are some areas that you could do this, Ill think about it..

you already do the lead wipe so most of the car was built by lap joins and lead wipe, there is not much to thing about mate.
as to the old corrode thing, its all in the prep mate, anyways when but welding that sill together how did you serves the inside, because if you dont she will rust with in 2 years of being finished, alot of people say yeh man i cut a hole and fixed it then re welded the hole shut...anyways man just a food for fort thingy, keep up the good work man.

cheers gong

Hi John.. I hear what you are saying.... John.. Im taking great efforts to rust proof behind EVERY panel that Ive fixed.. I have made a heap of different angled sanblast nozzles that go directly to the hose.. I can get this into most places.. I use POR 15 every ware. I zinc prime ALL seams that have no panel bond...

When I finnish the Sill panels.. I fill with Killrust rust kill untill it runs out.. I then let it dry and fill with "quality" fish oil if rusty or Cavity wax if ok, until it runs out.. I do this on the rotisserie and when full. I then spin around to make sure it gets every ware..... I know that you cannot get to ALL the welds, I have gotten 98% and am confident that the rust is dead/welds are covered.. I Know that you cannot garrentee that rust wont come back.. Im making great efforts to try and stop

Is there any other way?
A lap join will rust as well.... if not treated properly..

Mike

Hi all...
Been playing in the shed today..Thank god its not hot.. A comfortable 30 deg... Loving it :)

I made some templates/patterns for the window cowl common rust points..
It was easy to do, just a little thought involved..

I dollied/tacked together over my car.. Turned out really well.. Ill finnish tomm.. After I kill all the rust and rust proof as best as I can as The owner does not want me to take off guards.. Ill work around that somehow...

This way I can save most cowls and dont have to take off car.. Ill work out the best way for me to do.. shouldnt be too hard..The first one is always tricky..

Tyr it guys.. Its easy to do..

Mike

Window cowl part 2.. :)

Hi all..
I mannaged to finnish the RH window cowl side today.... Its the worst side.. It turned out really well... You wouldnt even know it was rusty now... I pushed some seam sealer inside the window frame just to make sure it was sealed properly..
I cut the piece I needed off the free shitter... I knew it would come in handy...

I cut bigger just incase it didnt work and had to fix...

There is 3 lips again as to 1 rusty bit.. Ill fix inside the dash area tomm.. Ive had enough for one day and its in a funny position.. Ill re-weld the holes and use my dye grinder with a metal cutting burr to clean.. The Burrs work really well.. You have to buy the exspensive ones.. the cheap Chineese just doesnt do the job.. Mine cost $80- $120 each. German and they last forever..

So... after todays exercise... Im very confident in fixing the cowl area now.. Its easy but time consuming as you cannot hold the heat as it WILL warp.. Notice how it is nice and straight and follows the proper contore with out any dips/swelling... Heat control guys...
Ide say a day per side in the condition of this.. BUT... I do need a donor cowl... Or buy mine.. not cheap.. I dont really want to sell as I will need..

Im going to repaire my 4 spare cowls, when I get a chance soon...... If the price is right.. I might sell, keeping in mind guys that to get a cowl..You have to buy a donor car..

Next time

Mike

Lots of pics..sorry guys.

Anyone want/need some repairs done? Im seriouse and wont charge heaps.. Ill give a fixed quote and if it takes longer.. My problem.. ONLY LC OR LJ TORANAS AT THIS TIME..

I've got a 2door LJ you can do a fixed price quote on. Slightly rusty. Was going to give to some guy called mike. Do you reckon $500 would cover the rust repairs ?

Hi All....
I visited my old girl on the weekend.. Its going a bit slow, Ive asked him if he can possibly speed it up as he promised it would only take 3 weeks..That was 6 weeks ago!!!.. Cant push too hard as its a "love" job.. I would like to get painted before the warm weather goes... He has applied some more bog.. It looks like there is heaps on there.. But its very, very thin.. And mind you guys.. My car was a mess... :).. It looks and feels soooo smooth and nice sharp straight lines.. Love it..
I think he is doing really well... All gaps are still good, if not better as he OXY welded the guard egdes up a little to build and even gaps even better.. Ill remember that..

Hoping she comes home soon as I still have some work to doon it before paint.

Next time
Mike

Hi Mike it looks like u need a shrinker/stretcher not only will it save u lots of time it also gives a much better finished product. The pics are of a piece of metal that was folded at 90 degrees one side put through the stretcher then the other through the shrinker, took about 2 minutes.

Yep I think its great, the picture shown is only a snippet of what the shrinker/stretcher can do. Its an invaluable tool for restoration work.

Exactly will save lots of time, mine was a bit more expensive as it is on a stand and is foot operated. I liked the idea of being able to keep both hands on the panel I am fabricating to keep better control of the metal. But I think a hand operated would be okay depends on use.

Cheers Dave

Hi Aido..how you going?

Nothing new.. Its been very hot here, so no work in sheds for us guys.. Has slowed it down a bit.

RH side is done, primed. rear beaver is done, front section is done.. LH side is getting there.. All gaps are still 6mm.

Typical panel beaters.. Say one thing and deliver the opposite... It looks really good though, nice and straight.. no body ripples.. Its like glass...... SO I dont want to push.. I dont want ANY corners cut with my car.. Hes doing a fantastic job for me..

Pretty cheap to as Ive nearly finnished his 4 to 6 build.. I want it sandblasted before I go any further.. Just have the rear 1/4 to do, spare wheel well and front lower beaver....

Ive been busy anyway... Work and peoples cars on the go.... I have to stop taking jobs and get into my car....

Ive been busy fixing panels and trying to sell.... Need some cash to get paint.. Its not cheap.. Im going to use Spies Heckler.. about 2K just for paint..

As I know Ill post.. Im hoping to get there this weekend for a look..

Mike
