Hello Mike,

You have done a great set of updates over the last few months,

attention to detail as usual, but I like how you show/tell us all the easy ways,  B)

like "wet on wet, rotisserie, UV paint, POR 15, phosphoric acid, sandblasting, paint stripper" etc.

Can see the paint going on a real job.   :spoton:

Im learning as I go. Its expensive. Im lucky I suppose, My old amte is just a phone call away. Hes been doing it for a while and knows a bit. Ive shown him some stuff ive learnt.. Like using Epotec as a surfacer and going from there. He was using black etch, old school. He likes the epotec.

Its not too hard to do a quick write up. I go over this thread a bit as I tend to forget what Ive done.. Too many cars at once.
I took my time. Did the research and gave it a go. Im very confident in the spraying department. Never used a "wet on wet" sytem before. The 2k sprayed like acrylic without being dry. Didnt mind it. Im used to acrylic.

Question. Painting the car in acrylic or 2k... Would it matter to the final value of the car? Wanting to paint in acrylic, but after using the 2k. I liked it.. Will be cheaper in 2k. Wont have to buy as much.

I dont think painting your car in 2 pak will devalue your car Mike

Hi all.

Demasked the underside.. Looks nice..

Got the roof drip rails seam sealed, the boot flanges and inside the front guards to chassis...

Used Sikaflex 529..

Ill wait till it drys then clean up.. bit easier...

While its still on the rotiss, Im filling all the small marks, bog  pin holes, etc, before high fill as I dont really want a too thick a build..Just enough to fill the scratches etc. Using U-pol light weight body filler.

Mike

Another step.

Note.. make sure that you scuff the seam sealer before painting... Important.

Impressive stuff and thought my LC was rusty. I battled, swore and cussed with it for 2 years on the rotisserie. This thread brings back plenty of memories. Doing the same with a HR ute, never learn. Terrific workmanship, you must like work though. Good luck with the dreadded wet sanding and buffing the acrylic.

Regards

Sounds like 2000 grit. What compound are you going to use?

Havnt got to 2000 yet.. will use that on the clear.

Ive started rubbing down the Epotec with 400 dry, then high fill, will rub that down with 600 wet, and get finer as I go.. Lots of rubbing to do..

As we know, Its not the paint that makes the job..Its what it goes on...

Got some more done on the rear beaver yesteday.. It was done, I wasnt happy with it. Me being fussy again.

So I did it again.

Rubbed down, bogged, the epotec. I aslo fixed the "dent" in the side... Had to use bog as I didnt want to beat it out as all the work that was done might have gotten damaged.. The advice from the "old Fart" :-).

and patched sprayed with some epotec.

I like the Epotec, what I dont like is that you have to let sit for a while before any work can be done with it.. I tend to let sit for a min of a week to harden.

the second lot is the 2K Satin black and High fill...that cost $1445...

The total bill  just materials to paint the car is around $3300..... Plus the time to do...

Good luck with color buffing. I had to buff my little ST 204 Celica today. Buffing sucks, worked away all day, I can still see heaps of prep marks in the paint surface. Good thing its my every day driver. Torana is looking really good.

Regards

Hi all.

 Merry Christmas and New Year.

Finally, the  PPG D839 2 pack high fill is on...

first I seem sealed under the roof drip rail. I used masking tape for a straight line.. while I was at it I sealed up inside both rear wheel arches to quarters, etc.

Then started to rub down, using 400 dry. It took ages to rub down and spot fix the epotec. I was up to all hours doing it....

I wasnt happy with the bonnet . I gave it a slight skim of filler.. Epotec, waited a week and continued.

I spent some time masking up as I didnt want it everywhere.. Just where its needed.

I used 3 litres of the 2k.. basiclly the whole lot (came in 3 litres and 1 litre hardner). It mixed to roughly 3.9 lites with hardner and thinners.. 3 good coats.... It sprays well for a thick paint.. got a couple of small runs.. Doesnt matter as most of it is comming off anyway.

Im letting it sit for 2 weeks, give it some time to shrink, then rub down and start the colour....

Its been  long hual to get here.. Im happy....

Mike

Mate I am super impressed with the quality of the builds going on here at the moment, time that's been taken, attention to detail, and yours is no exception.
It's like everyone here is a damn panel beater/painter!
Good stuff.

This Epotec is starting to interest me. What did you rub down the light skim of filler on the bonnet with?

Regards.

Started with 60 grit on my board sander, just knocked over the rough bits with this. Then 80, 120, 180, 240, 320.. Always using my long board file.

Yes, the epotec is good stuff... Thanks Bomber.

Only draw back is that you have to leave for a week to let shrink..It does shrink..

I couldnt help my self.... I gave the car a "guide coat" and had a play with the board file.... 320 grit dry to knock over then 600 wet...

The body work came out nice.. so most of the high fill will be comming off....

Happy new year all.

I spent new years blocking down the XU-1.. Up late...

Long slow process.... The more time I spend on this bit, the better it will turn out..

Have found a couple of low spots.. Fixing as I go.

Looking good.. On track for the Acylic undercoating next week.

The PPG D839 high fill is very easy to sand as to the other high fills Ive used... Doesnt go on as thick as the cheaper stuff, flows very nice with good hold out.. Ill be giving it another few coats of it... Just to be sure..

This is the important part of the paint process.
