Hi all..

Ive finally undercoated the car..

4 coats PPG 1k primer @1-1mix.. @ 42psi 1.6mm tip gravity Devilbiss. 22cfm 160 litre tank compressor.

Used 3.5 litres..

started 7.45 am, finnshed 9.15 @ 15% humidity @22deg.. no wind, no bugs.. perfect..

Taking great care/time to mask everything..

Looks nice and straight.. way better than when I got it..

I always use the Devilbiss snake"..I recommend it.. Its not cheap, but moister is the killer.. this takes care of that.. and I also use 2 regulators/water traps.

Mike

Hi Mike, 6 coats sounds too many.
I was told 3 then block it, then 3 and block and so on.
Not that I know what I'm doing.

Whats this snake thing? I've not long painted my little Celica and its full of small humidity blisters. I've taken steps to stop this fr0cken moisture even though I've improved it just can't completly solve it.

Regards

Whats this snake thing?

G'day Jon,

It's a "Desiccant Snake" or "Disposable, In-Line Desiccant Air Dryer"

Mike, just keep in mind that excessive paint film thickness can cause crazing and cracking problems in the future.

Yes, this is what I was told.

Better to put on three coats and rub one off, then another three and rub one off, rather than 6 and rub off two.

I know it means more work but I presume you are after the best job you can do.  You won't regret it, every time you spray and rub it just gets better and better. Also helps if you get any hairs, dust and imperfections.

Cheers

Marty

not if most is rubbed off and let cure before working..thats what Ive found out..Ive sprayed many a sign, using ALL types of paint..They hang in full sun and todate.. no cracking or crazing.. I do know what Im doing regarding paint.. but thanks anyways.

I here what you are saying Marty.. I thin my colour to about 1-1.5.. very wet and watery.. That way Ill get a good sheen and not a lot of dust..Thin coats.. so when I say 6 coats.. It is propbalby very close to 3 heavy coats at 1-1...  Been there done that.. but thanks. and no imperfections.. trying to beat the dust..

Hi all.

Well, got some colour on the undersides of doors, etc... I want to paint the car with ALL panels on..

Turned out ok.. Has a little orange peel as it was warm and I didnt put enough retarder in.. Only very slight.. It will polish out.. Next time, either cooler or more retarder?

I started when temp was 22deg.. It climbed real fast and by the time I got the clear on it was 34deg. caught me out. started very nice, got a bit dryer as i went.. added some retarder... needed more.

Oh well. its the undersides so doesnt really matter...

Im off to buy a new gun.. going to spend a few dollars as I want a Devilbiss kit, I want a large 10" fan for the body., about $900.... worth every penny, there the best.

question, is Rally Red an orange red or red red? I have a spoiler here thats meant to be Rally red, its very dark red.. nothing lik I just sprayed?????

Mike

Hi John..

how u going?

yep it is your old spoiler... question, no pun intended.. Is your red correct????? seems to be a lot of opinions. and looking at the pics Dave posted in google search.. seems its more orange red as to red red.. I might have a play with some black base coat and see what that does..it has been suggested.. before i do anymore.

and an original car is over 40 years old.. the paint wont be as it went down.. dont know if it fades darker or lighter but it will be differnt.

mike as far as i know it is correct in colour and texture ??  , been to plenty of torana shows and there is plenty of variables in rally red  it could be a case of different  brands ? or how stoned the bloke is that does the mix ?

Looking good Mike.

Hard to tell from the pics but it does look more orange than other rally red cars I've seen.

Maybe PM John Gong?

He would know for sure.

Could be the lights in your shed throwing the colour out.

That is the Rally Red that I know.

Looks very similar to Gene's Red Rocket that he had which wasn't an original paint job.
