Looks great Mike, very inspiring...

One little trick I have learnt is putting the bonnet/ doors boot etc on fittings as dry dummy fit whilst doing some of the last coats as to ensure perfect blending with the colour. You may be already doing this but just thought I would share the idea- it can really help give that extra touch of quality.

Great work mate, I wish I had your shed and your metal expertise!

Remember watching an old spray painter years ago finishing paint.

The paint was finished depending on the amount of peel.

If there was a fair bit they used 600 to knock it down a bit.

Then used 1200 to flatten it.

Saved a bit of work.

No orange peel,, Its very flat.. Im using 1200.. just did a test.. had a panel I was testing on.. sanded differnt areas with 400, 600, 800,1000,1200.

mixed some colour..sprayed very very wet.. not how ide do it, but want to see...

The 400-800. revealed scratches big time and will lift with the 400 krinkling.. it reactived the undercoat and let go.... the 1000 wasnt too bad.. the 1200 is way better.. as I thought.. Its not 2pack..its water thin Acrylic.... painted very thin..

GTR was painted differnt to the XU-1.. Its mainly the boot black outs..

Using no soap..It leaves residue/oils/silicons behind.. Just losts of water.. reverse osmosis water as Adelaide water has way too much crap in it..

Did the LC XU1s have the thin white lines in the grille and light surrounds that the GTRs did?

You can get a 'Terrestrial Lens' Mike,

That way, you will see things down here on Earth, the right way around.  :spoton:

Oh, and a nice Gold Cassegrain too,

no need to spot the "orange peel'' there is none.. well i lied, perhaps a small bit here and there.. The colour is laying down very flat..

The car is all ready to go for the next 6 coats, the shed is clean, I spent the morning wiping down the overhead lights/walls, etc and gave it a squirt out.. way better..

I couldnt be bothered doing it today.. Ill do tomm first thing..

Got some more bits for the puzzle.. I reacon now I have everything to complete the car once its painted..

I picked up some perfect NOS, as new, headlight surrounds. They wernt cheap, but they are perfect originals.. the LH will need to painted correctly.

Will match my almost perfect original grill.

and

got my seat belts, RMP originals.. will look the part, as new with not many marks.. new webbing, clips, etc..

This car has really emptied the bank... Might have to sell to get some cash back... to put into the other projects.. I have too many.

On another note.. Im back from work, 3.50am. Im wide awake,, cant wait to put the next 6 coats on.. will do as soon as the sun comes up and temp climbs a bit.. then bed.

Mike

Hi all..

Got the next 6 coats on.. After blocking down flat with 1000g wet in the end.

I put on a little heavier this time (didnt thin as much this time, visc 14 as to 12), knowing Im sanding back.. Again!..

Turned out well.. nice and even... has some slight orange peel.. itll go... Its getting "Redder"

Ive masked up the door jam as Ive finnished that area (6 coats + 6 clear). I was going to hang the doors an paint, but I changed my mind in the end as i dont want overspray through the gaps.. prick of an area to mask.... Colour is even all the way so no probs about being the same and its easier for me with panels off.. Just my way. Ill hang doors to get black outs right.. Then they dont come off..

First off, I spent the early hours washing down the shed floor and the "spray Area" with some soap and broom then a good squirt..

got rid of all the dust, but on the very last coat,, i got 2 bugs.. Just as the temp started to climb they came out.. at least they "stuck" to it rather than having a little walk around and making a mess. oh well, theyll sand out  .

Ive spent the last few days giving the shed a good clean..Im going to start to empty to get ready for the first few coats of clear.. Dont want anything in the coats.

Ive taken a pic of the spray pattern that Ive set the gun to. Its a good 12-13". Notice its nice and "squarish" with hardley any overspray.. very even coverage.. Great gun the Iwata Bel Aria... worth every penny, and the more I use it, the better I like it.. I was always a Devilbiss man.. This is better.

another step..

Mike
