Nice work as usual. That spray pattern is impressive, I'm going to have more of a play with my Awata W-77 to try and get it closer to that. Also, I reckon keep the XU-1 to sell when prices get silly again, and sell something else in the mean time. Easy for me to say of course, just my opinion. :-)

Yep, the fan pattern is very nice and consistant.. Makes painting sooo much easier..

If some one offers the right price.. Knowing I want get top dollar today.. I might consider. keeping in mind it is ORIGINAL with engine and garrenteed not to be a re-birthed car :-)

Hi all.

I got 6 more coats on this morning.. Nice day for it, no wind 18deg, no bugs.. perfect.

It turned out nice and flat with an even, consistant sheen.

I also got the black on the inner door lip.. 6 coats colour, 4 clear. Im doing it this way as once the doors are on.. How do you paint it with out a headache/mess... seems the go to me.. with plenty on the edge for blending in..

Ill let sit then block down...

The more I use the PPG AAA colour.. The more I like it.. sprays nice, blends well has a nice sheen off the gun and is very easy to block... I suppose you get what you pay for.. being what I paid for it.. bloody joke really.

Mike

I found the 1.6 works best for me..

I tried 1.8... way too much media and the 1.4.. way too dry.

Hi all...

After much debate, thoughts, etc.. and a wasted week...

I have finally decided which way Im going with the black outs... Its the best, closest I can find to an Adelaide built early XU-1...

I have started to do the "line work"... all straight.. Just need to link them to the door jams etc and Im ready to mask..

My sign writing skills help heaps while doing this, second nature to me.. Note how I transfered the lines from side to side.. On mylar film.. and I stuck some rubber strip to the inside of the A-pillar so the door doesnt hit and chip the door edge... Ta Marty... also with plenty of tape so I dont damage any paint while taking the doors off and on... The Acrylic paint is still very soft.

Ill be repainting the rear spoiler to match all the line work.

Anyways.. Im wanting to get the black painted this week... Weather permitting.. Its getting colder...

whats every ones opinion?  Am I going the right way?

Mike

a thought..

Im using PPG AAA "midnight black"  gloss as warrigal and Jet black aint made no more and Ive been told quote " as long as its black, its ok"... so midnight black is very "black"...

Masking off... Nice sharp, straight lines... Nice.. Im happy.

6 coats midnight black with 2 clear on top while wet so not to rub through while de-nibbing the line..

Already done that dave.. Masked the lines with doors on.. Now there off to paint.. They will align again no probs..

Yes the gloss off the gun is nice.. Will look even better when the final 6-8 coats of clear, light rub with 2000grit and a polish...

Hi all....

After so much thought/research.. Im happy with the line work for the black outs...

The car is masked and ready to paint the black outs, only using the blue or purlple tape to touch the paint. I prefer the purple as it goes around corners better. The "standared" masking tape will leave some "sticky" shit behind.. always does.. and the low tack blleds.. This way, nothing is left on the paint.. Just my way.. I dont like the green tape.. It bleeds.. and be prepared to buy heaps.. it gets chewd up real quick..

.... Only 12 deg and very damp here... It has to wait until it warms up.. Later tody should be ok...

It took ages to mask... I like the plastic as to paper because the paper leaves "fluff" when cutting, and the plastic holds the overspray better with no flaking.. Im running out of plastic so only used the paper on the door jams etc.. bit more rigid.. making sure to tape the edges over on the paper.. If you dont, chancers are when you give it the first squirt, you WILL get some crap off the paper.. Been there done that when masking/ back painting illuminated signage. Now thats an art inits self..

Now to wait..  (Gonna watch Nascar) The shed is clean, just need some heat.

Mike

I like the Norton purple and blue.. I use the 3m "green" pinstripe tape for the hard lines... I use the 3m AUTO masking tape for general masking.. I find these work the best..

Don't you just love masking, at least you have what appears to be a masking machine instead of saving up heaps of newspapers.

I look foward to seeing it with all the black trim.

Hi All.

Got the black outs done this morning.. Its a very nice day with no wind, no bugs.. Way better than yesterday, worth the wait..

I got 6 coats of colour and 2 of clear.. I like adding a couple of coats of clear so I dont rub through the black when denibbing the line.. makes it easier..

As I was at it and the shed was nice and clean.. I decided to clear the bonnet and boot.. 6 coats on. When I block back Ill then decide if I want more..

Ide like say 4 more on top after blocking down.. Give me something to work with when I polish it..

Tomm, weather permitting, it should be ok.. Ill clear the doors..

 Another step..
