Hi Mike

Looking good and love seeing your using a raw unpainted top for that real original look.

cheers Dane

Trying to keep as original as I can.. The heater box in previouse pics is for my missus LJ GTR..

Pic is the one Im building now for my XU-1.. Did the test on the LJ now to do the one that matters.

The XU-1 was painted.. after some elbow greese and 1litre of thinners.. It was hidding a very good box. After some minor fibreglass repairs and a light scuff with steel wool, cut-n-polish.. Looks very nice.

Its very hairy looking.. No fibres are comming out of the fibreglass, its smooth as.... Just looks like a woolley coat. Ive looked at a few now and they are all a bit different as to how they look regarding the fibres.. I like the hairy look.. Ill keep building the 6 heater boxes I have and pick the best..

Just finnished the motor.. as new and tested..

Yep I hear ya,it's a very time consuming job restoring these heater boxes. The one I have in my XU now was like yours(painted) and took hours and hours to rub the paint off without scuffing up the glass to much.
This is the third box I have put in my car since I finished restoring it as the ones I had in before we're good but as you come across better ones you can't help but to put them in!
Anyway keep at it this will be one very smick car when finished.

And Bomber there's nothing wrong with hairy boxes,as long it's a good clean box that's what matters!!

Refurbished some LC fuse boxes.. One has a radio..

Thanks Martin Sibley "sibhs" for supplying the decals..

Tricky little buggers.. Worked well. No way I can get lettering this small..

Pulled apart, cleaned up, dipped the fuse holders in some acid for a few secs.. cleaned them up nice..

Gave the lettering a couple of coats of matt clear.. to seal.. Looks the part and as good as new..

Way better than the dirty one.. I have plenty of them..

Im happy.. :-)

Hi all.

I was bored and cold this morning.. Below zero here in SA,, well it was not much over now.. I kept myself next to the heater and I rebuilt some more wiper motors..

I got all the Lucas ones I had here that were fixable.. 5 in total.. I think I only need 3? So if any one wants one.. PM me.. I have a few dates.. 11-71, 4-70, 5-73, ALL Lucas blue zinc Adelaide build.

All work fine, bench tested, they park and start easy..

Not sure what there worth..

I coat mine with clear resin, seals up the surface and gives a gloss/matt finish depending on how it's done

No.. polish.. Got the face plate and barrel re-zinced, bead blasted the motor case and cleared it.. Pulled apart and rebuilt.

I did that to a spare one I have.. Im yet to sand/polish.. It needed something as it was very sun damaged and cracked.

Looks ok.. way better than what it was... Ill post before and after pics when I get around to fixing it.. I have doen the 2 i need now..

I use the "west system"  Epoxy resin for marine.. It dries very clear as to grennish tinge on most resins.

derr... brain freeze, farken -3 here this morning.. bit hard to get motivated..

Ok.. Ive bought a few different pads as all the shops said differnt. I went to the 2 main suppliers in Adelaide..

Using  the " FARECLA" Q3 as first cut.. with orange or white pad ( im yet to decide, ill do some tests) either the 3M or the Velocity.

3M polish with black 3m pad for final cut swirl marks etc..

then wax with Farecla wax.. Is what has been recommended..

I bought a heap of small pads off ebay and tried them all.. I liked the blue "ceramic cut" with the Q3,, but cant get that type of pad anyware in SA... typical.. I had to buy what they sold.. cost me $300 odd dollars.. that is why I wanted someone else to do it .. might not of been cheaper, but quicker and probably better..

Ohh well..

One thing I found.. I dont like the "wet" cutting.. makes tooo much mess and I was told not to leave any of it on the panels as it will spot, exspecially the 2K satin in my engine bay and under neath.. If id known before hand i would of bought dry.. but being a novice.. It was recommended to use wet as it runs cooler with less chance of damage..

Im coving the car as i polish and only doing a panel at a time.. takes ages but has to be done...

Tried yesterday.. farking tooo cold to wet rub with water.. maybee today.

I asked my old mate what he recomends,, he said he hasnt cut acrylic for years, so what he knows will not apply as The PPG DULON range when using a clear on colour has to be treated as clear over base when painting..

The T1 was for the overspray underneath.. I had a little on the chassis rails..worked a treat.. wont use on the colour as its pretty aggresive..

One thing i did discover.. was that I was getting really fine scratches in the panel that I had  a test with.. couldnt for the life of me work it out.. It was the towel i was using to wash/wipe clean.. I had some mcquires soft poilshing clothes that Ive had for ages.. gave them a go, and no more scatchers.. silly me..

So I go to buy some more.. and yep, no longer available.. so I was talked into getting a micro fibre cloth to wipe down? any thoughts on this???

This acylic is still very soft even after 3 months of sitting.. I suppose it has been chilly.. I might leave for a bit or will it always be soft? Im not game to wax as yet either..

On another note.. Ive discovered that there are 3 differnt headlight bucket adjusting screws.. Maybee why 4 banger and 6 cyl are different part numbers.. I reacon long on out side and one of the shorter ones up top.. and also the very hard to get/find original adjuster knobs.. any idea if one or two were supplied.. They did come with the cars guys.. I got them all of LC,s

Oh and your spot on michrofibre cloth to wipe of polish after buffing is a must...

your welcome to come and polish mine..... I went to the PPG agent and no mention of their polish..would of been better with one as to 2..they aint cheap..

Typical sales in Aus, They sell what they have and not what you want..

The Farecla has has some good reviews.. Dont know about the 1500 scratch removal.. I have to use 2500, then 3000 to get what I want..

Hi all..

a few more steps done today.. Got all the fidley bulkhead bits , steering column outers, brake pedals, etc etc painted with  2k satin black as wet on wet.. Took all day to sandblast and paint..

and while the sun was shining.. I masked the car and applied the stone guard to the car.. In the wheel wells and the firewall/tunnel as per original  ( note how it goes all the way to the left and not the right) except I masked where the steering column goes as I didnt want the crap there so I can put the column in with out head aces and make a good seal.

Im not going to paint.. Its close to the satin colour anyways..

for your referance I used 1 litre.

The car is now officillay 100% painted/sealed, etc, etc...

Now polish/assembly..
