I have been trying to get a straight answer out of the RTA NSW for a few days now. But they are stuck on what motor I can put in my hatchback LX8UH77 (SL or Sunbird). Due to the "SL" only coming out in 4cyl,6cyl and 253, they are saying that I can not put in a 308(5ltr) into my car due to it not being an "SS" due to differences in the structure of the car.

From my understanding there was no difference in the build apart from engine and gearbox options. Apart from the LX A9X what had a different top trailing arm set up for the diff.

Please help???? so I can straighten these dickheads out.

Shouldn't be an issue. A large percentage of v8 Toranas running around weren't v8 from the factory.

And yours was a Sunbird by that model no. if you weren't sure.

The 308 and 253 are the same size and weight, so there should be no problems, all LX Torana's accept for LX A9X Torana's had the same Disc Brake front ends and Disc Calipers, thats from sunbird 4 Cyl's to 5.0 Litre V8 LX Torana's, tell them that all the brakes are the same, so cant be a brake issue with them, and im guessing if anything you might need heavy duty shocks in front, as in a pair of Gas Shocks for a 253 or 308 V8, there is no reason why you couldent have a 308 in a LX Torana model as they came out of the factory as a V8 Model.

Firstly, what do you want to do to your car?

When you work that out. then go and see your local garage or engineer to see if that is legal/possible under the current legislation as they are the people who interpret the NSW GOVERNMENT TRANSPORT Roads and Maritime Services (now know as RMS in NSW). Your don't need to deal with the RMS until you're paying money for registration etc. Don't worry about trying to sort them out.

If you have a hatchback (as indicated in your avatar) you can put a 308 in it and make it legal in NSW.

You just have to comply with the Australian Road Rules and legislation,(and NSW legislation Re engineering if you go down that path).

P.S. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. Do your homework and you should be ok.

There was a thread on here about the SL did come from the factory with a 308 as an option but it had to be requested (but it was rare).

A compliance plate photo from one of these cars should be all the proof you need.

Welcome to the forums Michael, as far as I know some 4 cylender models did not have the bracing from the top of the rear wheel arch to the bottom of the rear side window Triangle shaped bit with a hole cut out to get to the top of the shock absorber. Also LX did not have bracing inside boot area from wheel well to wheel well. Apart from that there were changes in spring, shocks, engine mounts (the opel powered (if you could call it that) had a different engine mount to the rest) plus a bunch of detail changes that don't matter when doing a custom job
this is my car with it bracing from wheel well to under the window

and this one is of a UC sunbird that did not have bracing

Posted Image

other structural difference are inside the rear boot floor shape and bit for spare wheel to sit in and UC had bracing in the boot area from wheel well to wheel well
see below (oh and thanks to Dirtbag shoes photos I have pinched to answer this)

Going through the same problem trying to register a factory 6cyl LH with a 304 V8. Pretty certain it's classed as an owner certified modification as LH-LX came with a 308 V8 option (even if it meant having to by an SS or SL/R5000) but it comes down to who you go & see for the blue slip, some will just sign off on it, others may request an engineer report. Especially if it has other mods such as upgraded brakes or a 9".

If you dont have yearly rego checks.....

Mind you you could get the block decked (dirty holden bent eights have the engine number right on the decking level)..... and the machine shop could accidentally stamp in the number that your 253 had........

It would be one in a millon of that happening though.......

Cheers.

Had a similar issue when we went to register the missus UC... It was originally a Sunbudgie, and we put a 6cyl in it...

The guy at VicRoads said we needed an engineers report to put a 202 in a sunbird because it wasnt a Torana... He was adamant about it...

We told him to read what the Compliance Plate said the car was... Which was a Holden Torana Coupe... He got all huffy, went inside, obviously spoke to someone or looked something up, then came back and said it was going to be ok...
