I think you're on the money with the top hose I didn't even think of it. Perhaps it has something to do with the thermostat coil being fed through.

In the thermo fan kit did they give you a rubber fillet. The rubber fillet must be inserted between the top tank hose spigot and the thermocouple tube as you install the top hose otherwise you can experience coolant leakage from the top hose around the thermocouple tube.

Yeah I fitted the 'fillet'. Maybe it just needs a bit of a tighten. I'll have to look anyway I can't be 100% as the hose doesn't even reach all the way flush with the top tank. I wonder why it happens when it cools and not whilst it's under pressure and hot

Have a look at the end of the hose, you will see the fabric that's in the middle, if it's stained the colour of the coolant it could be a faulty hose. The hose can damaged internally & the coolant finds it's way into the fabric a seeps out when cool.

You were right, the hose was stained. Turns out the fillet had come loose and was causing it to leak when it cooled. Fillet was all creased so i got a new one from Davis Craig, who is conveniently around the corner from me, and fitted it all up. What a pain to fit!

Later that day i was driving home when all of a sudden bang and pop pop. I thought i busted the alternator bracket so i pulled over to check. Not a bolt out of place throughout the whole car? I go to start it, pop pop pop pop, could barely drive it. Its just missing and popping. What's happened? When you are trying to drive the car just bunny hops and misses. Could the plugs have fouled? How can i trouble shoot this? Any issues with the carbs? All i did was change the damper today, and fit some cooling cowls and a fuel pressure gauge.

Take the fuel pressure gauge out, try again.

I'll do that anyway but I pulled a few plugs and they are charcoal. Fancy that after I had the carbs balances a fuel mixtures set. I'll throw a new set of plugs and it should fix it. As for the gauge I've determined that the air gauges don't work. I can't seem to find a fuel gauge ANYWHERE. Any ideas?

Had similar noises when I did a timing gear.

When it stripped it jumped one or two teeth but continued to run roughly

So this is the latest. Plugs obviously fouled so i changed them all, and to no avail. Slipped balancer maybe?

You thinking balancer or timing gear? What causes this?

Balancer wont cause that.

Timing gear goes because of age.

Has it been replaced?

Another possibility may be the dissy gear, but usually when they fail they fail totally

That should rule out the timing gear then.

Pull the rocker cover.

Good point my rocker arms were due for pre load adjustment after initial run in. I had the sideplates off to troubleshoot some leaks and a few push rods were a little bit loose to spin. What could have happened exactly? This is pushing my mechanical knowledge a bit and i dont have my mentor around to help me. He's in Europe lol.

OK, sorry,

Done a head gasket, do a compression test because, you can miss the water jacket and still have no compression

if two cylinders are low, it means it has blown between the two cylinders, or if one cylinder is low, it has blown out the side, both can still be working badly and no water jacket problems. Dave I

you can hear the out the side one

I'm no Holden 6 expert but is it possible when changing out the balancer, the crank timing gear key has fallen out? When you down shifted it slipped on the crank?
