Hey Guys

Was just thinking that some may find this interesting.

Basically, my girlfriends VE SS commodore started making a nice chirping noise that was consistent with moving rocker gear.

To cut a long story short, a new set of liters, cam, heads serviced at a total of 4k, its back on the road.

She has had this car from 14000 km's old. It was an ex Holden executive company car. Completely unmodified and has Perfect service history. This car hasn't had a hard life since she has owned it and it only has 80000km's on it and is just out of warranty.

What a great reliable car! Not to mention it chews a litre of oil per 5000km's. Oh, and the other day when driving in the rain, the windscreen wiper blade snapped off.

Gotta love that single row timing chain too! its all quality!

The guy that did the work still recons they have less problems that the Fords.

Evan.

Yes... One persons bad experience means all cars of this model are crap....

There are lemons in every batch of cars, unfortunate that you got one.

my work car is a Ford Territory it is 18 months old and has done 27,000 trouble free Km apart from

(okm) Headlights don't work they are point almost straight down, have to completely replace both assemblies

the spare wheel is off a falcon and does not fit, it is an 18in wheel while the car has 17in wheels I dont find this out until the hard way stuck 80km from nearest town and 20km down a bush road

(3000km) front wheels have 5 degrees of camber, have to pay for repair they claim I hit two pot holes

and headlights still not adjusted right, apprentice breaks adjuster, que another new head assembly

(16000km) Steering jamming when I was driving a bush road to a remote site couple of hundred meter drop on one side and bank on the other, universal joint in steering column had collapsed 3 months for new replacement to be designed and manufactured under recall

(20000km) buttons on dash fall into dash and mechanic discovers headlights not installed correctly

(20001km) car still at dealers when it refuses to start, ECU crash have to memory wipe and reprogramme

(24000km) all four tires chewed out from wheel alignment being so far out still way too much camber on the front and that is with a Ford Camber kit to try to fix it

and last week fuel gauge goes OS

It is a lovely car to drive tonnes of grunt and great handling on the dirt heaps of room for me, but I think it was built on Friday afternoon just before knock off or Monday morning first thing while every one was still hung over

Nothing a big cam, new lifers , head services, performance exhaust, valve springs, pushrods ect ect ect. Maybe it wont be the last???

I reckon what has happened there is the lifters are held in a plastic collar and are retained only a few mm by this thing.
The lifter can then turn inside the collar and then the roller no longer follows the cam properly.
It all goes pear-shaped from there, and the damage in your photos looks consistent with this outcome.
Nothing wrong with the single row chain - it is just fine for unmodded and indeed heaps of engine shops don't upgrade to double because they aren't all that renowned for failing in the L76, L77 or L98 engines.

This is why any performance mods, esp those using a decent cam will use linked lifters to stop them turning in the collars.
When rebuilding perhaps consider going this route for durability and confidence it won't happen again?

Is it a DOD engine by any chance?
Just there are lots of stories of those lifters collapsing - possibly another cause is all.
ls1.com.au is your friend.

Cheers, TB

my mate had a VE wagon as his company car, and he drove through water 2 foot deep and seized the engine. Apparently the air intake is really low in the front and it just sucked all the water up. The tow truck driver said it was a common problem with the VE's. Lucky for my mates company it was only 6 months old, so they got a new engine.

My old dato ute with sr20det had it coming up over the bonnet in flood water, coz i had to get out of area before it got too high. I just held the clutch half in and kept revs high, and just got through. Only buggered my fuses for light and the brakes didnt work for a few hrs. But engine wise it was normal.
He was a sales rep and out in the bush, and while out there the DIP's in the road filled with water. So he had to go through it or camp on a farm for a week or 2.

1998 vt acclaim, 3.8 ecotech engine, 330 000 hard kays on the clock, survived the june long weekend floods in newy (repairable right off)

I got I with just over 130k kms on the clock, dropped fluids, box replaced due to rusty clutchpacks (left with water too long)

Out tyres on it, service it and thrash the bum out of it reasonably oftEN.

My brother bought my parents v6 vs off them with 250 000 on the clock, sold it years later with another 300000 odd p plater kms on it (500+ thou).

so magnas making 200+ k kms is great, but the good ol holden v6 is very underated and underloved!

The VE is just a rubbish car full stop. The Commodore died after the VZ model finshed.

Funny you should start this post Evan, I was thinking of doing the same.

I have always been a Holden guy, well it was an obvious choice really as my late father worked at the GMH Woodville plant for many years.
As dad was a GMH retiree he was entitled to a gold pass which provided him or any other immediate family member with 35% off a new car purchase, (Locally Made).

Over the years my father, twin brother and sister have purchased a new car through the scheme, early last year I decided to treat myself to a new VE Series 2 SSV Sportwagon, Red Hot in colour .

Upon taking delivery of the car and driving it home, I noticed the paint under the rear tailgate area was not painted correctly, I could see an undercoat through the red which stood out significantly, I found this after discovering the rear bumper had been scratched by the guy installing the tow bar at the dealership. The front bumper also had to be repainted as it also had imperfections where the bumper meets the L/H front guard. I also experienced problems with the leather trim/back seat, had something sticking out through the leather so the whole squab was changed under warranty.

Other than these issues, I was impressed with the performance and aggressive appearance of the Sportwagon, so much so I traded the Red Hot car on an Alto Grey one in late March this year, and further problems arose.

When I arrived home with the car I noticed two dents on the roof line above the rear passenger door, I told the dealership and the car was subsequently booked in to have this repaired. Prior to having this work performed the clutch developed a shudder, at this stage the car had a little over 500kms on the clock. A few days later I went to use the Sat Nav in the IQ system and a message came up on the screen telling me the car was not fitted with Sat Nav, this was not the case as I had used it a week or so before.

To cut a long story short, the car has been back to the dealership to have the clutch replaced, dents fixed and a new IQ head unit fitted to cure the Sat Nav issue.

The VE Series 2 SSV is a great car, it drives well and has exceptional performance and looks to match. Unfortunatly the quality isn't there, this is the second vehicle in 12-months where I have encountered quality issues, due to this I am not sure there will be a third car despite the discount.

I recently completed a Holden customer satisfaction suvey and forwarded it back to Holden, at this stage I haven't had a response.........

Prior to me buying the first VE I owned a VY Berlina, this car was exceptionally reliable, I experienced no problems at all with the car and sold it having travelled 125,000kms.

Attached are pics of my first car, the Red SSV and my second car the Alto Grey car, despite my dramas you can't beat the striking appearance of these cars.....

"Cheers"

Alf

The company I work for just terminated the leases early on three Mitsubishi Tritons that had engine issues that Mitsubishi could or would not fix. The cars spent more time at the dealership than they did on the road. The engines would just shutdown without warning which can be quite exciting when you are overtaking a road train or entering an intersection. No more Mitsubishi's for our fleet.

I think all manufacturers are capable of making a dud. We need lemon laws like they have in the USA so if they make a dud they have to fix it or give you your money back.
