I replaced the one in my LX,

I just went to Rare Spares and picked one up - easy.

Sometimes a google search works better than the one here.

The slot in my steering column also had 'flash' over it. This is just left over steel in the casting process filling the hole so the slot may not look like an actual hole, it should be only a thin layer so just scrape or press a small screwdriver into the slot to clear it out of the way.

I changed mine a few years ago, bought an aftermarket one that I just couldnt get to fit (couldnt get the locking tab to pop out in the hole from memory).
The local rares had a NOS one, bought it and it dropped straight in.
NOS in my opinion is the way to go!
cheers

If I could get a NOS one I would defiantly pay the money, in my opinion the rare spares ones are rubbish like most of their parts, the look good but don't crack upto be anything like original, my ignition barrel was very sloppy after installation on the head tangs either side of the key you could pull it in and out about 4mm, the barrel often got tight to turn and finally only the other night it decided to bind up and not come free, the car has barely been driven so the life limit was very short compared to that of a daily driver, resulted in pulling it out and chucking it away, it was the "NICE" branded unit with nice stamped on the keys, I've ordered another brand off eBay from seller :kingswood country, hopefully it's ok I've purchased some good items from them in the past,

So yea stay away from rares "nice" key set because it's NOT NICE!

I bought one from Rares for my LX many years ago and it's still going strong.

Not sure what brand it is but it has 'FOR GM CARS' stamped on the key.

Whilst we are on the subject of ignition barrels. I just had a look at the one I bought from Kingo Country.

Now it appears a little different... I am not familiar with the various positions of Torana ignition barrels.. Is it ACC OFF ON START??

It appears that the stepped section is much shorter on the new barrel compared to the old one. How will this difference effect things?

My guess is OFF will be further back and it'll be a shorter turn between OFF and ACC.

Try installing it and see what the difference is.

Yeah I would have thought that OFF would be the further most position also, but some old cars are a little different. Is that how your LX is?

Its not really the sort of thing I want to fit together to find it being incorrect and have to pull it apart again... Id rather do it right once..

On the LX, ACC is the furthermost anti-clockwise.

To be honest I've barely ever used ACC. In my youth when I had friends in the car they'd want to listen to the stereo when I'd go to fill petrol, etc. so I wired the stereo to the horn fuse so you could switch it on when the keys were out of the ignition. It would save me leaving the keys in the car when I wasn't in it.

Though you already have the old one out right?

If so you can try out the new one without having to put back on the steering wheel.

Now you mention it, I think there was some difference when I compared my old and new barrels but when installed it worked fine.

I had to return the first barrel I bought because it was a UC barrel, I wanted it because they only have one lip and somebody (on some forum) told me they were the same internally but they're clearly not.
