Looks good, probably worth having a look those c pillar seems before they get any worse. The fabric on the front seats is not original, they look to be the same fabric I did mine in back in about 1997, it's the closest I could find at the time. Does the aircon work? I wouldn't bother with a ht prefix motor, if you can find one you will pay a premium, the fact it was originally a 6cyl it won't matter what block you put in it. If you want to put a 308 in it save yourself some money and use any block you find.

What could I get away with motor wise for ease of rego in NSW
I know a 308 wont be a problem, how bout chevy 327 or 350
Can anyone steer me to a crate option.
Just wanna bolt in and enjoy at this stage,

If you want bolt in, 308 is the way to go... Car looks good, I definitely wouldn't play with it too much. If that 202 is the original motor, keep it wrapped up in the shed if you put an 8 in.

Why dose every one that buys a genuine original SS or SLR bust their ass to get one then mess with it. Don't fit a Chev you will F$%& it like the majority have done with theirs. Cheers Aaron.

Therefore Im not bastardising the car by slotting an engine such as the 1 in the link.
Hows the price 5k ? worth it for the HT engine prefix ?

Nice purchase mark if it was me i would go the 308 motor in it and dont listen to anyone remember its your car mate do what you want to it

Looks like a pretty good buy mate! would be a nice car to just tidy up and maybe plonk a 308 into. If you want more cubes you could always build a stroker..at least it will retain some form of authenticity? good luck with whatever you decide to do it with it!

If the motors gone then put want you want in it.Buying it and flaring it is another story.
Im sure youd need another gearbox,diff and brakes,suspension??? modified to suit the new motor but im not 100% sure on what needs done as ive never done it myself.
Its a genuine SS Hatch and you gotta be happy with that!!!

Sound good for the money you could pay more for any 308 with all that done. And it should go very well. Add at least another $2000 for ice ignition, pacemakers and a copper radiator as I think alloy ones look ordinary in original cars . Plus you will need a M21. I would pay the extra dollars for a HT prefix block for a SS. Just put painted rocker covers and a stock air cleaner on that engine if the manifold fits under the bonnet and it will look like a L31 SS. Cheers Aaron.

Nice car for sure. I was surprised it didn't sell quicker. I am with the masses here, fit a 308 not a chev to try and keep the originality line.

i think a 308 that looks standard would suit it best
if you want more power , do what i did, stretch the 308 to 383 and then you have heaps of power and it still looks standard

My ideas are similar to
but if you go 308/M21 try to leave the rest of the car original or at least make it easy to convert back to a 6 if desired as there are not that many ridgy didge 6cylinder SS Hatches around and you should be able to get the right prefix 6.
A fella not far from here has an A9X Hatch and all of his changes are merely bolt on bolt off ie seats, bonnet, motor & rims.
You have a top car there Mark, enjoy.

Don't you just change the shaft in them to suit a V8?
I put in a Supra 5 speed in mine, from outside you can't tell it's not an M21 unless you're underneath the car.

You can still have a V8 with the diff and radiator you have, it's how GM-H released them. As long as you don't thrash it you'll be okay.

firstly congratulations on buying a legend aussie car..torrie hatchbacks are very cool..course im biased 
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE SOUND OF A V8!!! i agree with the above ..put a 308 in it you could even go the el stoko look ..stock rocker covers black air cleaner etc and no one will know the diff..plus its an easy conversion

Have you thought of a hot holden 6, they go pretty good (just ask Bomber Watson, he'll ramble on for hours at how good they are 
) and they sound great, have a listen to some LC & LJ's

Actually if you want some advice just drive the car as it is now, get the rust fixed etc tidy up one or two things but keep it on the road and enjoy it as it is then in one years time if you have done several thousand KM you will have an idea what you like about the car and how you use it. you might surprise yourself and really like the 6 as it is and just cruize everywhere, or you might find you want just a little more noise and spirit and therefore modifying to a hotter six is the way, or indeed you want the speed and aircon and cruize control power windows etc etc. But you will have had 12 months to get to know the car and how you want to use it and start gathering the parts required to build it to be what you want.
All that said if a mild V8 is all you want stay away from the chev, not because they arn't good but just to keep it looking semi orginal. and a well worked 308 and sound damm fine and still give a easy genuine 400hp and 11 second quarter mile time. OH and forget the M21 they were weak and pathetic new and even worse 40 years on go modern and strong in the gearbox diff
oh and one last thing welcome to the forums AKA the internet loony bin..... Tag your it
