The numbers on the car match up with compliance plate (the one without paint trim etc)
But the vin tag doesn't match any numbers with compliance or the paint, trim tag
Are they meant too?
Is it possible for it to be registered without it matching?
Done vic vin check got no hits. needs 17 digits/letters apparently
Vin: 8231jh239493
Body:alj 08130b Matches on car But not on paint and trim tag
Any help is appreciated

No problems there. "S" Model 2 door, completed in Adelaide on 30/5/73 and sold by dealer 442 during July '73. The original 173 engine number was CD334254.

hello all im looking at buying a lj 2 door and just would like someone to tell me what the numbers on the VIN mean number is 8C69LGH281667J. any help would be awsone and would also like to no how many plates its ment to have, been trying to do research myself but there is so many people saying different things.
8 = General Motors Holden
C = level of luxury, in this case an SL
69 = 4 DOOR SEDAN
L = 202 6cyl engine
C (not G) = model year 1973
H2 = Brisbane (Acacia Ridge assembly plant)
281667 = the PSN production sequence number. The 2 in H2 is also the first digit of the PSN.
J = LJ series
The car should have 3 plates. The long skinny one on the right side of the rad support panel.
BTW that vin you have supplied should not be on a 2 door Torana. Or the car in question was a 4 door converted to a 2 door???
There should be a body ID plate on the left side of the rad support panel.
The body plate has the model number, body number, trim and paint codes and drivetrain options.
There should be a compliance plate on the plenum shelf up behind the master cyl and or brake booster.
The compliance plate has the ADR numbers, the month and year of manufacture and chassis number which must match the chassis number stamped in the left front wheelhouse panel.
The compliance plate will also state if the car is a 2 dr or 4dr sedan.

The car should have 3 plates, the skinny VIN plate, the body ID plate & the ADR compliance plate.

the compliance plate says that it it a LJ Torana Sedan 2 door
If the chassis number on the compliance plate matches with the number stamped in the left wheel house panel then that is the most important thing for registration.
Forget about the skinny VIN tag, it doesn't belong to that car and should be removed.
Also, the Model number on the Body ID Plate should be 82311, if it is 82569 then that plate is also from the 4 dr SL.

Seeing as the person who repaired the car was obviously too lazy to remove the 4dr VIN tag and install the correct 2dr VIN tag I will assume the Body ID plate (if fitted) currently on the radiator support panel is also from the 4dr SL.
The good news is the Compliance plate and chassis number correlate.
