Started to make up the exhaust manifold, used the bracket i made to work out where i was mounting the turbo to make up a jig.
IMGP2224_resize.JPG 143.91K 6 downloads
Started making the colector by cutting up 4 peices of 1.5" sch 40 pipe and welding 2 together.
IMGP2228_resize.JPG 124.79K 6 downloads
After they were welded together i cut the peak off and cut out the side so they merge to one point.
IMGP2230_resize.JPG 141.8K 6 downloads
After that they are welded together and while still hot i hammered the sides flat to make more of a rectangular opening.

From there i started planning how i was running the pipes.

Wow, your metal work is awesome. A real credit to you.
Question... when you make an exhaust manifold, with the welds which are hard or near impossible to get to like some of the ones up above, how do you make sure you weld it all up and don't miss bits?
Do you test it with water that it's sealed up?
Posted 30 April 2013 - 07:13 PM
Emu after i have all the runners tacked in position i will weld as much of the manifold except for the welds to the manifold flange and one joint on
each of the runner near the colector. Then i will brake each runner off and finish the welds off and then put it back in place and weld it to the flanges.
Bomber, no 6 just put the side ones on later.
This is the shape of the cut out of the side ones.

Nice workmanship! I'd love to see some photos of a runner once you "break them off". I'm having trouble picturing what you described.Emu after i have all the runners tacked in position i will weld as much of the manifold except for the welds to the manifold flange and one joint on
each of the runner near the colector. Then i will brake each runner off and finish the welds off and then put it back in place and weld it to the flanges.

Got all the runners tacked up then welded as much of the welds as possible. Then broke out the runners and finished welding and a quick polish.
Manifold tacked up.

Did you have any trouble with the flange warping after welding?
Posted 12 May 2013 - 10:03 PM
Very nice. This is a very interesting build and you are making me feel lazy with your great creativity.
Well done on taking on such an individual outside of the box build. Considering we are in 2013 I appreciate such thinking. This type of modification has so much relevance to the modern hotrod way of thinking.
Excellent

Thanks guys for the positive comments.
Jabba, the flange pulled about 0.5mm at no.5 runner, after i have finish the wastgate i'll take it to the machine shop and get the flange machined.

The flange was 12.5mm thick.

Got the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler tacked up and changed the pipe from the intercooler to inlet manifold to allow for a 3 row radiator.
