Hi All..
Not a brake question but a brake fluid question ??

My Hydraulic clutch decided to start leaking whilst I was out and about.
I made a quick dash into a servo to buy some brake fluid to top it up so I could get home.
All they had was Dot4 , so I bought it.
The cap on my hydraulic clutch master cylinder states
(only use Dot3 Fluid)
Could I have done damage mixing the Dot 4 with Dot 3 ???
(only put in enough to half fill the reservoir

It was strange..after topping up the fluid I got home and it hadn't appeared to have lost any further fluid ??

Only reason I knew there was a problem because my pedal is usually firm from the instant you push it.
As I was driving i started to get free play, and by the time I stopped, I had to push the pedal to the floor to engage/ disengage the clutch ??

Anyway will look into it when I get time..but would Like an answer to my question at the top please..

Quote from another site

"Most people realize that brakes work by turning kinetic energy into heat. The brake rotors and pads get very hot, this heat is transferred to the brake fluid as well, if the brake fluid gets too hot and boils it effectively puts air in the lines and will lead to brake failure.

You can put DOT 4 in place of Dot 3 but not the other way around.
Note DOT 5 is completely different and is silicone based, it is not compatible with DOT 3 and 4 systems
