G'day,

Just got my hands on a new set of plugs following some head work. The ones i were given were for a '186', part # BP5ES. The NGK catalogue actually lists a different plug for the Torana 186 and the part number i have is only consistent with the HK's. The other question i had in mind whether these 'standard replacements' were suitable to use with HEI as the manufacturer would have designed them with points in mind.

Cheers

As long as the gap is at least 1mm they will work, after a good run you can pull they and see if they are close enough for your needs.

Do you still have the head off?
Screw the plugs in and have a look if the threads protrude into the combustion chamber IMO this is more important than what numbers suit what.

They are the right plugs for the head just not sure if they were the right plugs for my head as there are different part numbers for different 186's and no consideration made for a 186 with HEI. I researched it a bit more and think that the LC XU1 ran a colder plug because of a higher CR perhaps? So for me with a low comp i think the BP5ES would be fine... But then again i would need the appropriate plug gap regardless so what is necessary to take full advantage of the HEI? They are currently .08mm

Cheers

Don't know that the bp5es came specifically pre gapped for a Holden 186!, though they would most likely be pre gapped with the average points ignition in mind. There shouldn't be a problem in increasing the gap from whatever they are preset at. Whilst all plugs may have not been designed to cope with hei 40 years ago, whatever comes from current manufacturers shouldn't have any issues.

I'd suggest starting at 1.2 mm and seeing what happens. The optimum is going to be somewhere from 1 - 1.5 mm, depending on your coil and the quality of the insulation on your leads and how they are routed,

If you set them at the max gap then as the plug wears the gap only gets bigger, not a prob if you want to adjust the gap every few 1000kms or so, but the improvement or any imporovement in performance or economy at max gap is unlikely to be significant to justify.

I'd also suggest using a resistor plug , you most likely have some electronics that you'd like to enjoy while operating the vehicle. You to are going to be making a much bigger emi pulse with the hei,
