Having some trouble piecing my wiper motor back together and need some help please.

The toothed wheel inside the motor body has a shaft which has a bent connecting rod attach at one end, and the other end of the rod attaches to the wiper arm mechanism.

The rod has an elliptical hole and uses a nut to secure it to the shaft which contains two flat sections on either side to which the elliptical shape of the rod slots on to - at least that what is seems it should do - see below image.

My problem is the hole in the rod is too small (8.9mm dia) versus the shaft (10.2mm) and there is no way the rod is going onto that shaft.

I had a look at some pics I took when pulling it apart and the bolt retaining the rod on the shaft is barely on indicating the rod never was slotted down the shaft as it seems to be required but is sitting on top of the shaft's face, only retained by the nut - see below image.

Surely this can't be right - the shape of the shaft and the hole in the rod doesn't make sense otherwise, and with all that twisting force the nut couldn't hold the rod in place.

And so I am thinking, the rod and shaft must be mis-matched, or have I missed something here?

I was thinking of filing the ends of the shaft down to fit rod's hole but just wanted to check that I wasn't doing anything wrong or see if someone had a better idea.

And yes I know, I should get myself a Preslite unit but it's all about the $ and I am trying to get by with what I have.

Cheers, TB

Different part u have there I'm guessing it's from the other wiper motor the Torries came out with as I have the same motor and this part fits fine on the shaft as it is slotted to suit cheers.

Yeah, I think you are right.
The good news is was gifted a Preslite unit yesterday amongst other things, and so I don't have to muck around with the Lucas unit anymore :)
The rod on the Preslite unit I was gifted has the same part number as the one with my Lucas unit, and surely they wouldn't have the same P/N given they come from different manufacturers, meaning it was never going to fit because the two don't belong together.
Cheers, TB
