As the title suggests...

What is the best steel for fixing rusty bodywork? and where do you get it ?

Just got myself a 200A inverter mig welder and you might say it's about to get a good work out on an old rust bucket.

cheers,
Adam

I have got my sheets for rust repair from scaps from the sheet metal supplier my father uses for his buisness. Probably try there for cheap material.

I'm using .9mm zynchaloy i think it is called. It doesn't rust as it has a coating on it, but you need to grind/wirewheel the coating off before weldiing or painting.

was about to ask that...
why would you use a zinc coating if it has to be welded and will most likely be painted?

Well the first sheet i got sat around for like 3 years before i used it, so it didn't go rusty in that time.

I tend to reuse whatever I have lying around, working through the remains of an HR wagon roof at present. Body deadener can be a pain on old panels but nothing better when you're trying to match compound curves and the like

same here I cut pieces from a donor Torana, if you work it right you can get shapes to suit
roof and door skin good for flats but as above tar stuff is a bugga
sales rep for CIG told me best to use material from a similar age and make car as the alloy composition would be the same and you get a better weld and reduce dissimilar metal reaction

Zincaneal, or zinc coat, its the one that has a flat uniform grey colour, not the zincalume or gal stuff, that stuff spits and farts and yes it has to be ground off, the zincaneal can be welded through easily and will generaly not rust where the coating has not been damaged.

I didn't destroy it, the rest of the car was falling apart and it was the only panel to escape the dreaded rot...!

Just go to the wreckers and get an old bonnet or boot or door or whatever, any big flat panel...

Apart from the Rare Spares sections, my car is all Torana... I used bits of the wrecked guard and bonnet I took off the car originally :D

my donors were stuffed by others before I got them, unfinished drag car or rusted/pranged past fixing
I have sent panel bits all round country so other Toranas can live

Bugger cutting up old panels, its such a pain in the arse removing old paint and tar.

Go to your local metal supplier and buy a sheet of 1mm cold rolled mild steel.

Otherwise known as bright mild steel.

Its easy to form and beautiful to weld.

Yes,its oily when you get it,to prevent rusting, and your hands will get dirty handling it,but its by far the best option.

If you want to store it for a long time, prepsol it and give it a coat of GMH black. You can wipe it off with thinners when you want to use it.

Or just store it somewhere dry.Any light surface rust that might appear can be quickly vibrated off and you will be giving any

newly repaired areas a wipe with rust convertor before paint anyway.

thanks 4 the advise..

My next question was going to be.. what is the best stuff to spray on newly repaired welded panels? I plan on spraying the whole car ( not a show car by anymeans.. think bush pig fj40 ) I plan on only cutting the rusy bits out.. fixing that and spraying over the top of any un damaged areas...
Bad idea??? I really don't know much about paint and panel.. when the Torana was done I was a just a lacky doing what I was told so didn't learn too much about products and processes...(brother in law was the prof spray painter and did all the skilled stuff, he now lives in Austria)
