At least 16cfm. 20+ would be ideal.

Cheers.

^ agree, this is where bigger is always better.
Too small compressor will lead to it running all the time and running hot or worse overheating.

Be warned, anything over 15cfm is usually 15amp and will not run off a normal house powerpoint.
(well not without some mods anyway).

Point being if it was only $50 difference between the best and biggest 10amp compressor to the next better and bigger 15amp then I would go the 15amp but if the difference is greater than $200 then I stick with the 10amp one for home use.

Mark,
As others have said bigger is best with compressors. As big as your budget!
16cfm is about as big as 240 volt and will be 15 amp will go then you jump to 415 volt.
With any compressor you need to look at FAD, = free air displace, Italian cylinders are good,
Compressors heat the air, Friction, which means condensation moisture as it cools therfore get and use a good water trap,
It will help protect the tools.

Hi,

Is the CFM rating what you guys are talking about or the FAD rating.
On some I've seen the compressor is rated 17cfm and 12cfm FAD.....yikes!

Look for the FAD, This tells you how much air you get to actually use, its often quoted in litres per minute @ xx psi.
Emu, a 17cfm may only give 12 cfm fad, it may not have a big enough motor to do any more.

this is good. im seriously looking for a compressor and a mig welder

what do i need for spraying the car (and hopefully cars) ????

so far only really looked at repco and supercheap

ok i need 16+ CFM free air delivery right? normally i see air compressors rated at liters per min? is that what im looking at??

as many details would be good for the guys new to the game. and where to get them

also what do i need for a new mig? just for panel work and smaller stuff. would prefer a gas.

thanks guys

I just bought a scorpian compressor, 15 amp, 100 litre tank, 3 cylinder, 310 Fad. I run two water traps, 1 on the compressor and 1 at the start of the hose. Afaik the conversion for FAD to CFM = 28 .1 most compressors these days relate to fad not CFM. My local paint shop advised me to by at least a 12 CFM . I've just painted a 2 door hq coupe and had no probs. very happy with the compressor I bought, paid about 1000. 3 year warranty. Hope that helps.

For mainly panel work i would be looking at either a lincoln, cigweld or unimig. Definitly get a welder that you can run with gas, it is much neater cleaner and easier to use with gas and solid wire. You won't need a welder over 200A for panel work but it is nice to have something a bit bigger to be able to use on all sorts of jobs. Something like this lincoln http://www.lincolnel...product=K2473-1
or this unimig would be ideal http://www.unimig.co...1&subcategory=1
I would say both of these machines would be able to weld up to 4-5mm.

Places like AIS, Complete steel, Gasweld and Bear fast have a pretty good range of these sorts of hobby migs. Good luck.

Cheers

Sorry to dig up this thread but i thought it would be better than starting a new one. When you guys claim a minimum of 16CFM are you talking FAD? I just upgraded from a shitty direct drive, 2.5hp 200lp FAD (seems like bullshit to me) to a 3hp, 15amp belt driven 269 lpm FAD unit. I think this equates to 9.5 CFM. What sort of performance should i be expecting? It retails for 800 brand new and i picked it up for 345 S/H so can't comlaing.

Also Bomber, how do you regulate pressure if you bypass the regulator.

Cheers
