I don't have really comprehensive records for LH-UC engines, but this one is probably late LH or possibly early LX. It is a high compression 202. Once you get into 6/76 HL prefix is manual only, autos were XQL, but prior to 6/67 both were HL prefixed.

Don't the engine have some sort of code on them to say when the block was made? It would be good to check if I buy a LJ.

There is nothing to decipher in the number, it is the 29398th engine stamped for LH-UC Torana. This includes all 1.9L (starfire), 138, 173, 202, 253 and 308 engines used in the three series with a H engine number prefix plus any 130ci exports that may have made their way into LH (if any).

Don't get too concerned about how early or late it is. If it isn't original to your car that HL engine is as good as any other one.

Your HL 29398 was before HL 7182* which was produced November 1977 so that means yours was produced before 1978 that is all my very breif record on HL engines reveals.
You need the last number of the code behind the oil filter to give you the year.

LH/LX Torana 3310cc (202ci) High compression.

Highly likely out of an LX Torana.

I think that is LX around 5-6/76, from a manual car. But I don't have a huge amount of these recorded so timeframe might be out a bit. Autos used QL engines or XQL if after ADR27A introduction.
