I've got some questions for the painters.
I've been reading other posts about using 2K primers & Epotec 408 seems to be in common use, but I can't get this without ordering it, & waiting several days for delivery.
I can get HiChem products locally, is the "2K Epoxy Primer" the same sort of product?
Can all body fillers be used over these primers as I have a nearly full tin of "Super Bog"?
I intend to use an Acrylic colour coat & the info sheet for the Epotec 408 says that it isn't suitable under acrylics.
After seeing how dirtbag used 2k around the door openings etc. can this process be used over areas that have already been primed with acrylic primer surfacer & spray putty, as I don't really want to rub it back again.

One question for you, can your hi chem supplier answer your questions?
Can you find a local, supplier of products who can?
This will help your selection alot if you have a good honest dealer you can talk to.

To answer your question honestly (and my opinion is more of an amateur than a pro) if you want a top quality finish and you don't know what you are doing (no offence) then you are really better off sticking with the one system and the one brand and following their instructions (and MSDS) to the letter.

This is one reason why when you take a half baked job into a pro to finish they usually want to strip it back and start again.

Hi...
If using ANY 2k primer. It has to go on bare metal only... Making sure to condition the metal before and and make sure NO acid is left behind.. really pay attention to this step.
You cannot go over acrylic of any kind.. and 408 over lead fill only as well.

You can put acrylic primer over the 2k when done.. Making sure to cover any bog with the 2k...

Im currently using Epotec 408 as my holding primer..When panel work is done,, The 408 over ANY bog/filler then acrylic primer surfacer, then some "light" spray putty, then primer surfacer then colour...

Not too sure about other brands..

I got the run around and people said that I can etch prime, then 2k.. Nope... no acid based primers of ANY kind under 408.. I had to take ALL the etch off... what a job as most of the car was done in it... We live and learn..

I used thinners, sanding and sand blast to get the etch off...

Hope this helps..
Mike

Thanks for your input. Looks like this project will stay all acrylic, next project I'll use the 2k primer setup.
Thanks Mike I knew someone had given a heap of info but couldn't remember who.
The local supplier is a spare parts shop, with limited knowledge that is mainly the info from the product sheets.

A good product for your application is the dulux autospeed 488-s0014 2k epoxy primer. I will post up the data sheet when I get a chance. Will go over bare metal, seals acrylic, can be bogged over. Rubs mint good stuff. As with any 2k product make sure u adhere to correct OHS.

Not Quiet. 2k Urethane primers can generally be put over an acrylic, epoxy's yeah not really.

Epoxy's dont have to be over bare steel, they can go over previously painted 2k surfaces, polyesters and phosphates, though its kinda pointless using an epoxy with a phosphate.

Phosphates must go over bare steel, not over anything else. There pretty pointless IMO, i like epoxy's better as there more versatile.

Hope this clears it up a bit.
Cheers.

Cool Bomber thats my understanding of epoxy and what I have done with no problems. A mate of mine who was a paint rep suggested I try it. I found the autospeed a joy to use and so far seems to be holding out quite well over the acrylic and older repairs.

cheers Dave

Some urethanes cant go over acrylic, most can, some epoxy's can go over acrylic, shouldnt, just how it is haha.

Cheers.

I will try and post up the teck data sheet for it but yeah real enjoyable product can even be rubbed dry with 120/180 on the speedfile to flatten slight ripples out, crispen swage lines up a bit and to pick up lows it does this without too much clogging of the abrasives. It,s not really designed to fill but it also does fill quite well. Steps I use take off any crazed or flaking paint, rub whole car over with ecenentric sander with 120 grit dry, autospeed 2 coats, bog repairs recoat 2 coats autospeed rub 320 wet some will argue but I like to rub wet to keep the dust down, 3 coats of acrylic primer wet rub 600grit and finally colour.

Cheers Dave

That looks pretty cool, seems to think its an epoxy and a urethane :D.

Best of both worlds? Must get some and find out.
